Home-grown plants are the pride of the hobby gardener. Celery is also easy to grow.
Growing celery in the garden: there are two options for the hobby gardener. Either he gets plants from the nursery or the garden store in May, or he grows his young plants himself. This is possible without much effort and special gardening skills. So the garden lover can look forward to self-grown, beautiful and robust plants as well as a good harvest.
Sowing starts in February
Step 1: Since celery germinates relatively slowly, you should start sowing in late February or early March. At this point, sow the seeds in a bowl of seed compost and press down lightly. Celery germinates in the sun, so be careful not to cover the seeds with too much soil.
Step 2: Keep the seed moist and ensure a constant temperature of around 18 to 22°C. Then the celery will germinate within 14 days.
Step 3: As soon as the first real celery leaves appear after the cotyledons, you can transplant the plants. To do this, put good, nutrient-rich soil in small plant pots, water them and then plant the celery plants. Finally, add some soil and gently press it down.
Step 4: You should make sure to water regularly and keep the temperatures even, then the celery seedlings will be strong and well rooted by mid-May.
Step 5: Now you can plant the young celery in the garden, raised bed or greenhouse.
Celery doesn't like cool temperatures. Therefore, pay attention to this both when preferring and when planting out. If it is too cold or there is even a risk of night frost, cover the plants or bring them indoors.
