Swiss chard is a very robust vegetable. All you have to do to process it is wash it, clean it and chop it up a bit. You can then process both the leaves and the stalks - for example into a chard soup, a chard pesto or a delicious chard smoothie. As a rule, all you have to do is cut off the dried-out stem ends. If you buy fresh chard, you must also store it properly. Leave the veg alone and it will go limp and lose its nutrients.

How to store Swiss chard correctly

As with all types of vegetables, Swiss chard tastes best when it is fresh. In order to extend the shelf life a little, it is advisable to wrap the chard in a damp drying cloth or put it in a cling bag. In this way, the chard will keep in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator for at least two more days.

Freeze chard properly

For those who have not grown chard in their garden and would like to have some of the freshly bought vegetables for a long time, they can also be frozen. To do this, you must first wash it thoroughly, clean it and, if necessary, chop it up. Surely you can already put it in a freezer bag and freeze it. However, it is better if you blanch it beforehand. As a result, the vegetables retain their color and aroma even after freezing. Now put the chard in boiling hot water for about 1 minute. Then lift out of the hot water with a slotted spoon and immediately place in ice water. Then take it out again, drain and dry well with kitchen paper. You can then put it in portions in freezer bags. Then just squeeze the air out of the bag, seal it and you can freeze the whole thing. The chard usually lasts up to 12 months.
