Jerusalem artichoke is relatively easy to propagate in the garden. You have two options for this. But be careful: If you are not careful, you risk spreading unhindered.
In the past Jerusalem artichoke was only known as a beautiful and tall ornamental plant. It was only over the years that the edible tuber became known as a he althy food in our kitchens. Anyone who grows the plant in the garden not only enjoys a pretty privacy screen, but can also fall back on delicious and he althy fruits.
Of course, as a hobby gardener, you can never get enough of such plants. Therefore, you will definitely like the fact that Jerusalem artichoke can be multiplied very easily. You have two different options:
- Propagation by seeds
- Propagation by tubers
Propagating Jerusalem artichokes by tubers
Propagation of the Jerusalem artichoke via the tubers is particularly catchy. Because the harvest means you already have fresh tubers at hand. In addition, you can already carry out the propagation during the harvest.
Simplicity is simply the greatest advantage of propagating Jerusalem artichokes from their tubers. Because you don't have to worry about seeds first, you can start propagating immediately after harvesting. If you don't yet have your own Jerusalem artichokes in the garden or in a bucket, you can of course propagate them with purchased tubers.
» Instructions:
Basically, the plant develops new plants from the tubers. The easiest way is therefore not to take all the fruits out of the ground when harvesting, but to leave one tuber in the ground at a time. In the spring, a new plant sprout from the remaining tuber. Alternatively, you can actually harvest each tuber and use your harvest to regrow the Jerusalem artichokes elsewhere.
The best time for this is spring or autumn. The only obstacle is ground frost as you cannot plant the tubers in the hard soil.
» Attention: If you grow Jerusalem artichoke in the garden, the plant often multiplies unbridled and spreads extremely. To avoid this, you should always dig up individual tubers and make sure thatNever leave more than one bulb in the ground during harvest.
Propagating Jerusalem artichokes by seeds
This propagation variant is a bit of a challenge. Not because the seeds only sprout under certain conditions, but because you only have a short window of opportunity to harvest the seeds. You can only remove the seeds from the flower.
It is therefore easier if you use seeds that have already been harvested. You can get these in stores - for example this one:

Put the seeds in a pot with soil, cover them lightly and keep the soil moist. As soon as seedlings form about ten centimeters in size, divide the plants and place them either directly in the vegetable patch or individually in a flower pot.
