Do you also like to eat peanuts? Then simply build them yourself. Read here how it works and what you have to consider when growing peanuts.

The peanut, which is so popular as a snack, actually belongs to South America. With a little love and a greenhouse or conservatory, it can also be grown relatively easily here in Germany. Try it.

Cultivation

You only need a fresh peanut for the cultivation. Of course, this should not be s alted or roasted. I have had very good experiences with these Tropica seeds. You have to peel the nut and put it in a small pot with moist potting soil or special cactus soil. You then have to wait for it to germinate.

» Tip:

It is best to cover the pot with transparent foil. This allows you to increase the humidity inside and speed up the germination time.

During the germination period, remember that the peanut in the soil must be kept consistently moist. You must also place the pot in a warm and light-flooded place (e.g. on a windowsill).

» Tip:

As soon as the peanut seedling is strong enough, you can plant it in a new pot with soil that is as sandy as possible ( alternatively, you can also use cactus soil).

Care

Location:

A conservatory or glass greenhouse is generally considered to be the ideal location for a peanut. Whereby she clearly prefers temperatures around 25 to 30 degrees with strong sunlight.

In the meantime, however, breeding plants and seeds are also available in specialist shops, which are largely adapted to our latitudes. However, you should never put peanuts in the shade or plant them!

Casting:

Peanut plants should then be given as little water as possible in spring and summer. During this time, plants also develop a brief flowering period, usually lasting just a day or two. The fruit stalk then grows directly into the ground and forms its fruits (nuts) there.

» Tip:

You should always put peanuts in a water-permeable pot, as they do not tolerate waterlogging.

In the fall, you must then significantly reduce the water supply. In winter you can usually even do without watering. Unless you keep the peanut plants in a very warm room where they dry out too much. However, it is then advisable to briefly sprinkle the peanuts with a water sprayer, which also increases the humidity in the room at the same time.

Fertilize:

Peanuts should be fertilized moderately in spring and summer every four weeks if possible with a complete fertilizer or vegetable fertilizer.

Harvest

As soon as the leaves of the peanut plants turn yellow, the nuts in the ground are largely mature and can be harvested. You have to pull the plant out of the pot along with the root.

Then you have to pluck off the legumes and dry them first before you can eat the fresh peanuts or grow new plants from these nuts in the coming winter/spring.

» Tip:

You should definitely dispose of the harvested roots on the compost as they are extremely rich in nutrients.
