A composter is a real asset in the garden. But where is the best place to place it so that it doesn't get in the way? We have some tips for you.
Composting your waste in the garden has many benefits. For example, you can use part of the garden waste and save money on expensive fertilizers. But once the decision for a compost heap has been made, where should it go and where is the perfect location for it? After all, use should be practical and it shouldn’t be a nuisance either. So that you can use the compost in everyday life without great effort, you have to find a good middle ground.
Note these points when setting up
» Hide the compost heap!
A compost heap is useful, but not a pretty sight. It is therefore advisable to look for a place on the property where the composter is not so obvious. For example behind a hedge or a bush. You will do that anyway to avoid being exposed to the sometimes unpleasant odors of the compost heap.
» Be considerate of your neighbors!
The same applies to respect for the neighbors. Since the compost is usually placed somewhere on the edge of the property, it could of course also become a nuisance for the neighbours. So you should keep enough distance to the terrace and the neighbors' house in order not to get into a fight.
» Don't put the composter too far from the house and the beds!
But the compost shouldn't be too far from the house so you don't have to carry the kitchen waste halfway across the property. On the other hand, the mature compost has to be spread over the beds at some point. The composter shouldn't be too far from the garden either.

» An open floor is important!
It is important to have an open floor, because on solid floors, for example concrete, waterlogging would form, which in turn would lead to rot. However, to ensure that no voles can settle in the compost, amIt is best to attach a wire mesh to the bottom.
» Choose a partially shaded spot!
The compost must never be left in the blazing sun, as this would also increase the odor nuisance. A partially shaded spot that is protected from the wind is ideal. Then the conditions for rotting as quickly as possible would be optimal. A location under a tree would be ideal so that the compost does not get the full rain.
If it is a thermal composter, however, it should definitely be in the sun - but then covered.
Hint:
If there are no shady trees or shrubs in the garden, you can also plant runner beans or sunflowers next to the compost to protect it from the sun in summer.
Small additional tip:
It is ideal if you create a paved path to the compost. You can reach it with dry feet even in bad weather and come back with clean shoes. It is best to create a slightly wider area in front of the composter, where you can conveniently park a wheelbarrow, for example. This makes work on the composter (e.g. when turning the compost) much easier.
