Choose your new lawn mower according to the existing lawn area, among other things. Our buying guide explains why this is important.

If you need a new lawnmower, you shouldn't just buy any machine. Finally, an important purchase criterion is the lawn area. If you buy the wrong mower here, you could only make your work unnecessarily difficult, because not all lawn mower models are suitable for all lawns. For example, a lawn tractor for a 500 square meter garden and an electric lawn mower for a 1000 square meter area would be pointless.

We have therefore made a note of which lawnmower is suitable for which lawn so that you can then select the best machine for your garden.

Choose lawn mower by lawn area

Lawn area up to 100 square meters

For a lawn area of up to 100 square meters, a hand-operated cylinder mower should be used. This lawn mower cuts the individual stalks with a blade roller. Some models have a grass catcher so you don't have to tie the section together after mowing.

But be careful:
If the grass is more than 10 centimeters long, hand-operated cylinder mowers are no longer suitable. In general, this type of lawn mower requires a lot of effort. But there are already cylinder mowers with electric drive or battery drive, which make mowing the lawn much easier.

Lawn area from 100 to 1000 square meters

A motorized device should be used for larger grass areas. Here you should either use a petrol lawn mower or an electric lawn mower. Both devices have their advantages and disadvantages, which is why you have to decide for yourself which device to buy.

A petrol lawn mower has enough power to easily cut longer grass. In addition, petrol lawnmowers offer independence from the socket and the problem of theCable cutting is also ruled out. And as far as starting the petrol engine is concerned, you don't even have to apply a lot of force here. Most newer devices now come with an automatic starter that makes starting the engine child's play.

In principle, of course, electric lawn mowers are also suitable. They are much quieter than petrol lawnmowers, which your neighbors will surely appreciate.

Nevertheless, such mowers are only recommended for gardens that have sufficient power supply. In addition, the cable can become a real burden when mowing the lawn. If this accidentally gets caught between the knives, damage is inevitable. But there are also models with an automatic cable reel, which ensures that the power cable can be pulled safely.

Lawn area over 1000 square meters

With such huge lawns, it will turn out to be worthwhile for you to get a lawn tractor or ride-on mower. However, you should also pay attention to the engine performance here. Most lawn tractors are also only suitable for hilly terrain to a limited extent.

The significantly increased cost factor should also not go unmentioned. But ride-on mowers and lawn tractors also offer a lot for their money. They can be used in a variety of ways with attachments such as snow blades, road sweepers, trailer spreaders and much more.

Alternative for every lawn: the robotic lawnmower

It's hard to believe, but robot lawn mowers are now even available in specialist shops. These little machines can take a big load off you, because they mow the lawn all by themselves. Many of these robots already recognize independently where the lawn ends because they create a virtual map before mowing. The robot lawn mower cuts the grass so small that you can easily leave it on the ground. Such robotic lawn mowers therefore work like mulching mowers.

However, this convenient alternative also has its price. On top of that, such mowers have to be charged for a long time. A charging time of up to 12 hours is sufficient for some models, while others require charging for up to 24 hours. Nevertheless, the advantages of a robotic lawnmower outweigh the disadvantages, so buying such a device can make a lot of sense.
