Garlic is extremely he althy and also delicious. If you can't get enough of it, you can easily multiply it yourself.
Garlic is used in almost every kitchen in the world. No wonder, because on the one hand the vegetables or spices taste really delicious and on the other hand they are he althy. For those who didn't know: Garlic keeps blood, heart and blood vessels he althy. In addition, the tuber is also said to have a disinfecting effect and anti-cancer properties. One more reason why the garlic cloves can be used more often in dishes. You don't have to buy the garlic from the store, though. You can also multiply it many times over from a single bulb of garlic given to you by friends or acquaintances. Because even a single tuber provided numerous cloves to multiply. This way you can grow your own garlic. Alternatively, you can also grow new plants from so-called bulbils or from seeds. However, propagation from the cloves is the easiest, which is why we recommend this variant.
Option 1 - Propagation by cloves:
The most common form of propagation is toe sticking. Of course, you could also plant the garlic from the supermarket in your own garden as soon as the cloves start to sprout. However, keep in mind that many varieties of garlic that are commercially available come from the Mediterranean region. So they are not adapted to our climate. Accordingly, they usually cannot develop properly in our gardens because they lack the consistently high temperatures.
You could only be successful with the tubers from the supermarket if you plant the cloves in a flower pot, because the plants would certainly not survive the winter outdoors. It is therefore best to get the seedlings from friends and acquaintances or from a nursery, because here you can be sure that the garlic will also thrive in your garden.
The best time to plant:
Aim for toe tucking between March and April or between September and October. Plant the garlic in spring, then the plants usually stay a little smaller. So autumn is clearmore suitable.
How to do it:
It is best to use relatively large cloves, as these usually produce stronger plants. Remove the outer, dry skin of the toes, then stick them about 6 inches deep in the soil. The distance between the rows should be around 10 centimetres. Make sure the tips of the garlic cloves are pointing upwards. After a short time, roots will develop and the long leaves will appear. Important: in winter, with prolonged moisture, the tubers can easily rot. Therefore, protect the root area with brushwood or straw.
Possibility 2 - propagation by spring onions:
If you already have garlic plants in your garden, you can also use the bulbs for propagation. In Russia, this form of cultivation has a long tradition and is practiced there on a large scale.
The best time to plant:
Between July and August, the plants develop inflorescences with pseudo umbels, which in turn contain the brood bulbs, the so-called bulbils. You can harvest these and plant them again straight away.
How to do it:
Insert the bulbs in rows as well, but only 1 to 2 centimeters deep. With this type of propagation, however, you must not remove the dry skin.
The negative: Not every garlic variety develops bulbs. In any case, it must be a shooting variety. You also have to be patient when harvesting the garlic, because in this case it will only be worthwhile from the second year of growth.
Option 3 - Propagation by seeds:
You can also grow garlic from seeds. This is very rarely done these days, but it can be done. You can either buy the seeds in stores or grow them yourself. The seed is located in the upper part of the plant in the flower. These are extremely hard and purple in color.
The best time to plant:
It is best to sow the garlic in February or October. Important: choose a location that is as sunny and sheltered as possible.
How to do it:
Sow the seeds about 1 to 2 centimeters deep into the soil. Keep a row spacing of about 10 to 15 centimeters. Then pour everything well.
