Roasted onions are indispensable in some dishes. But why buy expensive when you can make them yourself? We'll show you how!

Onions refine countless dishes, mostly they are fried. A special variant, however, are roasted onions. These have a very special aroma that raw or fried onions can hardly match.

Roasted onions go well with mashed potatoes, a roast, in pea soup or with liver. Of course you can buy ready-made roasted onions in stores. But they taste even better if you prepare them yourself.

Of course, this involves a bit more work, but it tastes even better afterwards.

What do perfect fried onions look like?

Roasted onions are so popular because of their sweet, mild taste. When you sauté or roast onions, sugar is released. This provides the delicious aroma. This allows people to enjoy onions that they otherwise avoid because of their spiciness. The main thing with the fried onions is that they get nice and crispy and that's the real art.

The vegetables contain a large amount of water and this must first evaporate before the typical fried onions can develop. It is clear that this can take some time. Of course, fried onions are ready much faster. One difficulty is getting the onions as crispy as possible without burning them.

Prepare fried onions - step by step instructions

Of course you can roast onion rings in a deep fryer or in a saucepan with lots of oil. However, they are very greasy. That's why we show you a lower-fat alternative. You will need a little more time and patience for this, but the result will convince you.

➤ Step 1: Peel and cut the onions

First the onions are peeled and cut into fine rings. It doesn't really matter which onions you choose for the roasted onions. If possible, the onion rings should be so wafer-thin that they appear almost transparent. But this can only be done with a very sharp knife.

Tip: WithYou can use a vegetable slicer to cut evenly thin slices.

➤ Step 2: Fry the onions

You can use either oil or butter for frying, but butter gives the onions a more delicate flavor. In a large skillet, melt the butter on medium-high. Use enough butter to cover the bottom of the pan.

As soon as the butter foams slightly, the onion rings can be placed in the hot fat. Now sauté the onions until they are translucent without turning brown.

➤ Step 3: Dust the onions with flour

Now turn up the heat on the stove and dust the onions with a little flour. Within the next 10 minutes, this should turn the onion rings golden in color. Keep stirring so that nothing burns.

➤ Step 4: Spread onions on a baking sheet

Now the onions have a nice color, but they are not crispy at all. Spread parchment paper on a baking sheet and spread the onions on it. Please make sure that the onions are spread out flat and evenly and do not lie on top of each other if possible. If the quantity is too large, it is better to put it in the oven in two stages.

➤ Step 5: In the oven

Preheat the oven to 80 degrees, then the onions come in for 90 to 150 minutes. The onions can be drained of water in the oven without burning them. In between, you can shake the baking tray and see if the onion rings rustle. Then it's time to see if they're crispy enough.
