It's always a shame when you can't get fresh herbs from the garden in winter. The solution: growing herbs on the windowsill. We'll tell you how.
The window sill makes it possible to supply fresh herbs for the kitchen year in and year out.Because sun and light, constant temperatures and no onset of winter are guarantors for a continuous growth of herbs in the house. So just try it yourself and grow herbs on the windowsill.
This is especially nice in winter, because you don't have to use dried or frozen herbs to flavor individual dishes. It always tastes best fresh. In contrast to frozen products, the aroma is also much more intense.
Which herbs are suitable for growing on the windowsill?
Of course there are certainly some herbs that thrive far better in the garden bed than on the windowsill, such as lovage, chives, tarragon and parsley. But there are also some herbs that are ideal for the windowsill. These include e.g.:
- Oregano
- Melissa
- Chervil
- Basil
- Nasturtium
In principle, you can use almost any type of herb for planting windowsills. However, it is important that you pay attention to the growth height.
Growing herbs on the windowsill - Here's how it's done
» Select planter:
Ideally put all types of herbs in individual planters and place them on the windowsill. The herbs in natural terracotta pots or in colorfully painted ceramics look very pretty, matching the respective room decoration. But herbs also look very nice in small baskets.
So-called herb easels for setting up on the window sill and herb garlands also look very pretty. These hang down directly on the window and can be equipped with several small pots.
» Plants or seeds?
In principle, you can use herbs from the garden trade, self-grown offshoots from the field and the seeds of freshly grown plants for the window sill.
» room temperature andLight requirement:
The average room temperature should be at least 18 degrees. Herbs that prefer it cooler and shady should be placed on east windows, west windows or even north windows. Sun-loving herbs, on the other hand, should always be grown in a south-facing window.
» Fight pests:
Unfortunately, herbs on the windowsill are not immune to pests. Unfortunately, they are often attacked by small flies. Causes here are sometimes too high humidity in the room (e.g. in the kitchen), the herbs were watered too much and/or rot is spreading in the hive. You should therefore only water the herb plants on the window sill when necessary and, if necessary, dispose of them if they are infested with flies.
In individual cases, one or the other lice infestation was also found on the herb plants. In the event of an infestation, however, it is sufficient if you shower the herbs well, then let them dry and repeat this procedure several times.
Apply herbs outdoors
You can also bring out herbs you have grown on the window sill outdoors in spring without any problems. Or you can place the pots on the terrace or balcony.
Of course, instead of a window sill, you can also use a conservatory or a greenhouse for growing herbs all year round. The advantage of both variants is, of course, that tall herbs can easily find their place in them - of course also as potted plants!
