Anyone can propagate cuttings. All you have to do is follow our little tips and it will work just fine with the cultivation of new plants.

Summer is the best time to propagate existing plants when everything is in full bloom. So you don't have to buy anything new next season and you always have a small gift of flowers ready. What sounds complicated at first glance is not at all. You only need a few accessories and a little patience, then propagation by cuttings will also work.

Propagating cuttings - step by step instructions

Before you begin, have the following items ready: sharp pruning shears, flower pots, potting soil, plastic bag.

Step 1

Pick a shoot on the plant that isn't flowering. One-year-old shoots are best because they are more vigorous than older shoots. Fresh shoots that are too young are not suitable, as they are still much too soft and moist in the stem and could go moldy so quickly. Cut off the selected shoot at about 6 to 8 cm (about the length of a finger).

» Important: The secateurs must be sharp so that the shoot is not crushed.

Step 2

Now remove all lower leaves. These must not be planted, otherwise they will rot and deprive the soil of the strength that the cutting needs to grow.

Step 3

The cut cuttings are now placed in the prepared, slightly moist potting soil. Make sure that you only insert the cutting so deeply that no leaves are planted with it.

Step 4

In the fourth step we make a kind of mini greenhouse. Place the pot with the cuttings in a sufficiently large plastic bag, with the opening facing up. This bag must not be completely closed, otherwise too much moisture will form and the cuttings will very easily begin to mold.

Step 5

Always keep your cuttings moist and ensure that the cuttings get enough oxygen. After a few days you will be able to observe the first roots and your cuttings propagation will have been successful.
