Prune main shoots annually
Only a few main shoots should be used, because side shoots develop on them, which then form the flowers. Main shoots can be pruned back several meters per year, depending on how big the wisteria should grow.
Shorten side shoots to 30 cm
The side shoots that remain are also shortened to about 30 centimeters. These side shoots should be shortened again the following year. However, at least ten centimeters should remain.
Pruning takes place in summer, before they sprout. However, you can also proceed more radically by removing the young shoots and formed leaves. As a result, short shoots are formed, which grow quickly and also form flower buds. The main cut already mentioned will then take place in the summer. In this way, the wisteria is not only dense and large, but also delights you with many flowers.
