Crocuses are pretty much the first flowers to bring color to gardens and lawns after winter. We show you how to create your own crocus meadow.

Early bloomers like snowdrops and crocuses are the first heralds of spring. You can often admire them even before the snow has completely melted away. The colorful crocuses in particular provide colorful accents - not only in gardens, but also on meadows. In addition, you are already attracting the first bumblebees and bees, who enjoy their nectar and carry the pollen. In the following we would like to explain to you what you should pay attention to if you want to create a crocus meadow.

Planting crocuses in autumn

So that you can enjoy the colors of your crocuses in spring, you should plant them about six to ten centimeters deep in the ground in autumn. Make sure the soil is well drained so that no waterlogging can form to prevent the bulbs from rotting.

Tip: Small flowers come into their own if you plant about ten crocuses in a group.

If you want to plant the crocuses not only in the garden but also in a meadow, you have two options:

  1. Throw out the crocus bulbs and plant them one by one
  2. Put crocuses in a group under the turf

Eject crocus bulbs and plant individually

A loose and random distribution of the crocuses on the meadow looks extremely harmonious. To do this, take several crocus bulbs in your hand and simply throw them in the air. Then plant the bulbs exactly where they landed.

1. With a weed puller you can easily poke holes in the turf into which you can insert the bulbs with the point upwards. If the hole is too small, you can easily enlarge or widen it with slight lever movements.

Tip: If you fell an onion the wrong way around in the planting hole, you can easily turn it around with the weed catcher.

2. On loose sandy soil you can easily close the planting holes with your foot. However, it is a loamy oneSubsoil, simply fill the planting hole with loose sandy soil and then carefully tread down with your foot.

3. When all the onions are in the soil, water them briefly. This creates a capillary connection to the water in the deeper soil layers. As a result, the water rises and provides the bulb with the water it needs so that roots can form and the crocuses can sprout quite early in spring.

Tip: On large areas you can run the sprinkler for about an hour

Put crocuses in a group under the turf

If you don't want to leave the position of your crocuses to chance, simply plant them in groups in the lawn.

1. To do this, use a sharp spade to cut off a piece of lawn on three sides and carefully lift it up with the spade. Put about 15 to 25 crocus bulbs on the ground and press them down lightly. Again, make sure the tips are pointing up.

2. Then close the unfolded turf and make sure that the bulbs remain in their position and do not fall over. Don't forget to tread the lawn firmly again.

3. In the last step, water the planted areas well so that both the lawn and the crocus bulbs can root well.

Autumn crocuses not suitable for crocus meadow

For crocus meadows you should only use crocuses that bloom in spring. We enjoy these flowers around March and April and they are usually withered before the lawn is mowed for the first time.

Tip: Do not mow until the crocus leaves have turned yellow. Otherwise you may weaken the plants so much that they die.

When autumn crocuses sprout, the lawn has not finished growing. When mowing a lawn, there is always a risk of damaging the plants. If you don't mow the lawn for the sake of the crocuses, the crocuses won't show their best advantage at all.
