The common ronini, also known as "mock acacia" or "silver rain", is an evergreen shrub or tree that hardly causes any work for the hobby gardener. For this reason, it is also particularly suitable for beginners. A special "spectacle" is the tree blossom, because between May and June clusters of flowers up to 25 centimeters long hang down from the branches. They distribute a scent reminiscent of bergamot.
Anyone who decides to have a robinia in their garden does not have a lot of work, but should heed a few tips for care so that there are no "nasty" surprises later.
Choose best location
The black locust is very adaptable in terms of location. If you have a choice, plant the tree in a bright, warm spot in the garden that is sheltered from the wind. Maintain a generous distance from the neighboring property. A mature robinia grows up to 20 meters high as a solitary tree and the crown easily reaches a diameter of ten meters. The minimum dimension to be taken is half of the diameter to be reached, in this case 5 metres.
For optimal growth, it is advisable to choose a loose and permeable soil for the robinia. The roots of the robinia have a high demand for oxygen. You can improve compacted clay and loam soils with coarse sand and organic material.
Plant Black Locust
If you want to replant a black locust, you should choose a container plant. Here you can be almost certain to get a specimen with an undamaged root system. Take the tree out of the pot and put the root ball in the water for half an hour so that it can completely soak up the liquid.
In the meantime, dig a planting hole that is about twice the volume of the root ball. Put in the root ball and pile up soil. Then you should stabilize the robinia on two opposite sides with an inclined post. This gives the young tree in thephase of growing stability. The best time to plant a robinia is spring. The tree will then have plenty of time to anchor itself to the ground until winter.
Water and fertilize black locust
A newly planted robinia should only be watered regularly in the first few weeks and fertilized occasionally. As soon as the tree has formed enough roots to provide itself with water and nutrients, you can stop fertilizing completely. You then only have to water if the robinia is in very dry soil.
Pruning Black Locust
The black locust usually grows very well and evenly without pruning. If you want to remove unsightly or disturbing branches, you should wait until after the growing season. Late winter in January or February is the best time.
Overwintering Black Locust
Robinias planted in spring are hardy and do not need special protection from the cold. It only makes sense to cover the tree pit with mulch and brushwood in the first winter after planting.
