Repot cacti - when is the best time?
The frequency of repotting depends on the species of cacti (Cactaceae). In general, however, it can be said that you should put them in a different pot every two to five years.
It is best to start this project between the end of January and March. Because during this time the growth period of cacti begins. Most specimens don't mind if they are only repotted after flowering in September.
The size of the cactus is also important to know when it is the right time to repot. If the cactus gets too big for its pot, it's time for a change. This point in time is also very easy to recognize because the roots are looking for a way out of the holes in the container. Likewise, it's time when the plant simply outgrows the edge.
The soil contained in the pot also provides a good indication of whether it is time for a replacement. If it looks too dense or worn out, it's time for a new pot.
It is also recommended to repot a cactus plant immediately after purchase, as you never know exactly how long it has been in its original container.
Repot cacti - in which soil?
If you want to repot cacti, you not only have to think about a new pot, but also about the right soil. Ordinary potting soil is unsuitable because it is usually too dense and cacti need good ventilation.
Best is special cactus soil that is crumbly in consistency and thus offers the plant enough space for the development of the roots. In addition, cactus soil has a structure in which the plant can grow stably and does not fall over again immediately.

Repot cacti - the right pot
Even if cacti are very undemanding what theirsAs far as care is concerned, they need a special pot that meets their needs. It is best to use a pot that has the following characteristics:
- The inner pot is ideally made of plastic, since water can be distributed more evenly here.
- There should be enough holes in the bottom of the pot to prevent waterlogging.
- If a planter is used, it should not be allowed to collect excess water, otherwise root rot may occur.
The shape of the cactus also plays a role in the choice of pot:

Repot cacti without injury - this is how it works
Due to their spikes, cacti are not as easy to repot as other plants. Adequate protection is important, as the bites can not only cause unsightly wounds, they can also become infected.
Please always wear gloves when repotting your cacti. In the case of specimens whose spines are particularly thick and long, it is also advisable to use pincers or other gripping protection to avoid injuries.
Even before the actual repotting, it makes sense not to water the plant for a few days. This allows the old substrate to dry and the cactus can later be better freed from the old soil.
Repot cacti - step by step instructions
- Put on gloves!
- Fill the inner pot a quarter full with plant clay.
- Spread the cactus soil over the bottom of the pot to create a hollow.
- Remove the cactus from the old pot.
- Carefully remove old soil.
- Place the cactus in the new pot and gently press the roots into the filled soil.
- Fill the cavities with soil so that the pot is filled to the brim at the end.

Cactus care after repotting
So that the plant grows properly in its new container, the right aftercare is necessary. Basically, repotting represents a change for them and therefore a certain amount of stress.
It is not necessary to water the plant immediately after repotting. You should wait about a week for that. In the first 4 to 5 weeks, the cactus should not be in a sunny spot. Only when the plant has developed new roots and accustomed to its new pot will it be able to withstand the warm sunlight.
