Primroses are known to thrive in cooler temperatures. But cultivation indoors is also possible.

What is the ideal location for a primrose?
Primroses love the light but shy away from the sun. Therefore, a south-facing window is not the right place for them. As a result of the heat, their buds will wilt, lose their color and the plant won't last long at all.
Another problem is the dry heating air, which has the same effect on primroses.
On the other hand, it is better if you expose the flower to the following conditions:
- North-facing window sill
- Temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius
If there is no space in the apartment that offers these requirements, there is another alternative: the bathroom. Humidity is a good alternative to the cold, which the flowers accept well.
Watering primroses properly in the apartment
There are plants that tolerate waterlogging, but this is not the case with the primrose. So avoid excessive watering. As a rule, it is sufficient to treat the primula with a spray bottle every day or two. However, it is important that the flowers do not get any of the water. Only the leaves and stems are sprayed.
Especially in late winter and spring, the plants need a lot of water, especially if they are placed near radiators. Otherwise, the drought could cause them to die and not flower at all.
Ideally use low-lime water at room temperature for watering.
Tip: Rainwater is particularly suitable for watering.
Do you have to fertilize primroses?
Primroses are not very demanding on the soil in which they grow. Nevertheless, it can be useful at some times to fertilize the primroses. This looks in detail as follows:
Time | How to fertilize |
---|---|
November to February | fertilize once |
Start of budding | fertilize vigorously |
Blooming time | fertilize every two weeks |
Repotting / replacement of soil | do without fertilization |
Tip: The suitable fertilizer is usually liquid and rich in phosphorus.
Do primroses need regular pruning indoors?
Primroses are easy to care for. They don't have to be cut. Still, it's a good idea to keep an eye on the flowers and leaves and remove them once they've withered. In this way, the plant is able to form new flowers or leaves in these places.
One final tip
Primroses flower particularly profusely if they are exposed to a temperature of around ten degrees Celsius over a period of four weeks.
