Hops are not only suitable for brewing beer. You can use it to green the facade of your house, for example. It's actually really easy.
Everyone really wants their house to be the nicest in the neighborhood. Of course you can enhance and beautify your property with flower beds, a garden pond and decorative elements, but why not beautify your house as well? After all, it's that simple. The solution is facade greening.
Façade greening is a beautification measure that not only impresses from an aesthetic point of view - you also make a valuable contribution to our environment, as it improves the climate in your living environment.
But which plants are actually suitable for facade greening? Hops, for example, are recommended. Anyone who already has hops in their garden knows that the climbing plant is easy to care for and also grows very quickly. Thanks to this plant, your house will soon be the center of attention in the neighborhood. However, the prerequisite is that you plant and care for the hops correctly.
Why hops as a green facade?
You can certainly opt for other climbing plants to green the facade of your house. However, hops have many advantages that cannot be topped. See for yourself:
- Since hops do not become woody, the shoots die off every autumn. Therefore, the greenery leaves no structural damage.
- Hops are easy to remove. If you ever get tired of greening, you can remove the hops within a short time.
- Hops grow relatively quickly compared to other climbing plants. In warm weather even 1 m per week is possible.
- Hops are quite cheap compared to other climbing plants.
Design options with hops
Since hops are a very easy-care plant, you can let your creativity run free when greening. In addition to the entire facade, you can also use hops to decorate individual areas of your house, such as downpipes, lightning conductors and trellises. But you can also add extra wire ropes to certain partsStretch your facade (e.g. next to the window) and let the hops grow along there. There are actually no limits to your imagination.
How to green the facade with hops
» planting time:
It is best to plant the hops in early spring, i.e. in March or April.
» Location:
Hop grows best on east and west walls. However, only if you plant it in humus-rich soil that prevents waterlogging but can still store moisture for a long time.
» This is how you plant the hops correctly:
The hop needs a framework to hold on to. For example, attach a wooden trellis or climbing rope systems to the facade. The latter are available from Amazon, for example.
Then take the plants and plant them 2 m apart. Then fill the planting hole with soil and lightly tread the surface. Then water everything well and fix the plants with a string in the direction of the house wall or trellis.
» How to properly care for the hops:
In order for the hops to develop well, it is advisable to fertilize them with compost twice a year (in spring and summer). It is also important that you water it regularly. Otherwise you only have to use the scissors here and there to keep windows and doors clear.
In autumn, the climbing plant retreats into the ground to overwinter. As a result, all shoots will then die off. All you have to do now is remove this from the trellis so that the climbing plant can climb up again next spring.
