A lot of people have east trees in their garden these days, but then mostly the common varieties such as apple, pear or cherry. Anyone who grows a persimmon tree can harvest delicious persimmons in October.
Kaki trees are easy to care for
Peach and apricot trees can now also be found in gardens more and more frequently. But these varieties are demanding, not only in terms of soil, but also in terms of care and temperatures. If you don't have a good hand in caring for such trees, you can't go wrong with a persimmon tree.
Kaki trees are hardy
The kaki fruit comes from East Asia and is slowly but surely finding its way into our gardens. This fruit has many advantages: it is hardy, grows in almost any soil and requires little care. Even a pruning is uncomplicated. The harvested branches are cut back to approx. 50 cm in late autumn to winter. You don't have to do more with the persimmon tree. It is also winterproof and can easily withstand temperatures down to -15 degrees.
Persimmons resemble tomatoes
The structure of a persimmon tree can be compared to that of an apple tree. Persimmon trees flower in late spring to early summer. The fruits of the persimmon tree look a bit like a mixture of oranges and tomatoes. In terms of taste, you can taste pear, peach and apricot. The kaki is not harvested before mid-October.
Kaki fruits have to ripen afterwards
You can only enjoy the kaki fruit, like a kiwi, when it has ripened a bit. It is only over time that it loses the bitter taste caused by the tannins it contains.
