Onions are a versatile vegetable that add a special touch to many dishes. But the onion is not only loved because of the taste, it also offers he alth benefits. Eating onions protects against diabetes, supports the body in preventing cancer, thins the blood and fights inflammation.
Although there are now many different varieties, not everyone likes the spiciness of the onion. So that you don't have to do without the healing effect, you can also caramelize the onions. This is certainly not the case with every dish, but as is well known, trying makes you smart.
When caramelized, the onions get a brownish color and a subtle sweetness. We will introduce you to two different methods of caramelizing here.
Simple Fried Caramelized Onions
Ingredients:
- 1 kg white onions
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 2 tsp sugar
- S alt
- pepper
Preparation:
➢ Step 1:
In a large pan, heat the olive oil, then add the butter and let it melt. A homogeneous consistency should be achieved in just under three minutes with constant stirring.
➢ Step 2:
Peel the white onions and cut them into thin strips. Now add the sliced onions to the fat in the pan, then add ¼ teaspoon each of s alt and pepper. As soon as the onions start to soften after about five minutes, stir in the sugar.
➢ Step 3:
Now fry the onions for about 15 minutes, stirring constantly so that nothing burns. The onions are fully caramelized when they are lightly browned and nice and soft.
Sweet Fried Caramelized Onions
Ingredients:
- 1 kg yellow onions
- 4 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 tsp sugar
- 2 tablespoons sherry
- S alt
- pepper
Preparation
➢ Step 1:
First the yellow onions are cut into thin strips. Then heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Now add the sliced onions to the pan, then sprinkle ¼ teaspoon each of s alt and pepper on top of the sugar.
➢ Step 2:
Stir the onions in the pan until they slowly soften. Nothing should burn. Then the sherry is added to the onions, these are stir fried for another 15 minutes until nicely browned.
