If you want to see your garden bed glowing in bright colors as soon as summer is announced, you like to use types of flowers that are easy to care for, grow quickly and are easy to propagate - of course, the appearance of these plants should also be right and appropriate at the appropriate time give off a dense, magnificently flowering summer picture. Because of its fiery-looking flowers in orange and red, the sun bride (Helenium) is a very popular plant for the garden bed - not only lovers like to plant them, but also gardeners who want to achieve a certain color in their garden or a large area with a flower splendor of this kind of want to cover. In the following we will explain in more detail what makes the sun bride special and how it is planted correctly.Sun Bride - small plant profile
Coneflower is a summer perennial scientifically known as Helenium. The benefits of the plant lie not only in its beautiful, sun-worshipping, red-orange flowers, but also in its growth. The plant quickly multiplies by itself and soon provides a whole bed of orange sea that lights up the garden like a summer fire. At the same time, the plants grow very quickly and are quite robust, especially when it comes to winter - frost hardly bothers the sun bride. The growth height of the sun bride is more than 50cm. A perennial can reach a width of up to 50cm. There are now more than 90 species of sun bride, which differ in height, width and color of the flower. In addition to two-tone flower variants, there are, for example, perennials that form mahogany-colored flowers, appear copper-colored or are even slightly yellower. Deciding on a variant here is difficult. It is positive that several species can be combined in one bed and easily kept in the garden for several years to please the gardener. In order to get to this point, however, the perennial must first be successfully planted - we describe how this worksbelow.
Planting sun bride - choose the right location
Basically, choosing the right location for the coneflower as a summer perennial shouldn't be too difficult, because the beautiful-looking plant doesn't make many demands. It is only important that the sun bride is given enough space in the garden, as it can spread rapidly and widely - many gardeners prefer this property and acquire the plant precisely for this reason, but underestimate the rapid multiplication and are taken by the growth in the entire bed strongly surprised. The location should be as open as possible on all sides - the sun bride also needs a lot of sunlight to thrive. If there are trees, hedges or bushes in the immediate vicinity of the summer perennial, this can affect its growth - firstly because it would then lack many nutrients, secondly because it can then get less sun. If you want to offer the best location, you should also make sure that it is protected from the wind as much as possible. After all, the beautiful flowers shouldn't have to break or buckle when a gust sweeps across the garden.
Container - suitable for the sun bride?
The summer bride can also be cultivated in a container if you don't have a bed available in the garden. However, it is very important that the bucket is big enough, as a perennial can grow up to 50 cm in diameter - so the bucket with a diameter of at least 80 cm should be used at the beginning and later possibly replaced with a larger bucket. It should also be considered that the plant spreads quickly - and can therefore fill the bucket very quickly. Waterlogging can also form faster in the bucket, which should be avoided. On the other hand, the bucket has the advantage that it can be moved if necessary, for example if the sun bride longs for a more protected place.
Planting sun bride - step by step
If the coneflower is to be planted in a bed or in a spot in the garden, the soil should be well prepared. For example, it is necessary to loosen it up well and enrich it with nutrients - because the sun bride needs a lot of that. Compost is well suited to bring the first nutrients into the soil when the soil is loosened. The soil can also be very rich in humus so that moisture is stored well. The hotter it is outside, the wetter the soil should be kept for the sun bride.
If you have bought or cultivated a perennial, it canplanted in a planting hole at least twice the size of the root itself. If you have brought appropriate soil with nutrients into the planting hole and around the perennial, you should water it sufficiently. Now you can also lay out a layer of mulch, which also stores moisture in the soil and protects it from drying out. Fertilizer can also be applied to the soil a few days after planting to encourage plant growth. If the plant substrate is permeable enough, no waterlogging forms, so that the plant can be prevented from rotting and dying.
Other than that, the sun bride does not have many requirements when planting: If you proceed in a similar way when planting in a bucket, this process is usually successful. In the event of drought, it is only necessary to prevent the plant roots from drying out in both planting routes - therefore regular and preventive watering is important. Incidentally, the sun bride should at best be planted in spring on frost-free days - then it has enough time to root itself sufficiently before the coming winter and to prepare and strengthen it for this. Then hibernation will also run smoothly.
