Canna flowers in a variety of shades of red and has large leaves reminiscent of banana plants. However, as winter approaches, you will need to bring your canna indoors so that it can hibernate. Consequently, being not hardy, this beautiful flower would not survive in the garden. So you have to dig them up in the fall and overwinter them frost-free.
Dig up Canna
When it's time to dig up your canna, there are a few important things to keep in mind. This is because many people make the mistake of digging up their canna too soon. However, you should only bring them indoors when the first frosts have already turned the leaves brown. Don't worry, your plant will not be harmed, on the contrary. If you dig up the plant too early, you risk losing vigour.
Storing canna properly
After digging up, you should cut off the tuber hand-breadth. Then you have to free the tuber from the soil with a brush and store it in a dry place. It is best if you store your canna in a box filled with sand. Alternatively, you can let the flower overwinter in the pot. With this variant, however, you have to store the plant in a dark and cool place and never water it. From May you can then bring your canna back into the garden and enjoy its beauty.
