So that the pampas grass loses none of its splendor, it needs regular pruning. But beware! There are a few things to consider.

Not all hobby gardeners agree on when and how to cut pampas grass. Nevertheless, you should not neglect the pruning under any circumstances. Some garden owners avoid it because they are afraid of injury from the sharp leaves. But with appropriate protective measures, this is not a valid reason.
You should cut the ornamental grass regularly for this reason alone to stimulate strong and he althy growth. In addition, the fresh shoots need enough air and light, and this is only guaranteed if you have removed the old shoots. If you cut back regularly, female specimens can even reach a height of up to three meters!

Best time to cut back
Pruning in Spring
Many ornamental grass lovers make the fatal mistake of cutting off the pampas grass in autumn. In this case, however, a lot of moisture could penetrate the culms and this in turn could cause rot. So you risk that the plant dies over the winter. In addition, the long stalks can provide some protection from the cold. Therefore, you should only cut back in the spring, when it is getting warmer and drier outside again. The ideal time would be late March/early April. Some hobby gardeners also cut the ornamental grass in two stages: first remove the first half in spring and then the remaining old shoots after the shoots have sprout.
If you prune the pampas grass in early spring, the plant will definitely be back to its original height by fall.
Pruning back in summer
Pruning back in the summer would also be conceivable, because then you remove the seed pods at the same time. In this case, however, propagation is no longer possible. Simply shorten the old shoots to a length of 15 to 20 centimeters. However, it is important that you do not injure the young shoots.
Pruning Tips
» Tip 1 - Strawstie together
You will make cutting a lot easier if you tie the stalks together in several bundles beforehand. This also makes them easier to dispose of.
» Tip 2 - wear protective clothing
You must wear protective gloves when cutting pampas grass, as the leaves are very sharp and could cause serious injury. It is also best to wear safety goggles when cutting to protect your eyes from injury.
» Tip 3 - use secateurs with long handles
For pruning, conventional pruning shears are perfectly adequate. A model with long handles would be even better, because that way you won't come into contact with the plant as easily.
