A water feature in your own garden without a pond? With a source stone this is possible without any problems. You can also build this yourself.

A source stone is not just a pretty garden accessory. Due to its components, it is also perceived as a refreshing elixir of life. And no matter what size you choose the source stone - the harmony between stone and garden (plants) is decisive for how much energy emanates from this garden stone.

But that's not all. Source stones, also known as bubble stones, are also often used by animals, which means that birds, butterflies, dragonflies, etc. often have quite an active encounter with the source stone. So a source stone is really more than a garden accessory. Here you will find peace and relaxation and you can also observe animals.

You need this to build a source stone:

  • Sourcestone
  • pump
  • Water basin
  • Cover for the pool (e.g. grid)
  • stones or plants of different sizes
  • possibly other decorative elements

How to build a source stone yourself

Step 1 - Select material and size:

Source stones are primarily made of fine marble, shimmering granite, slate that goes well with any rock garden, but also made of effective sandstone and are available from garden retailers or modern stonemasons. With a little manual skill, you can easily create a beautiful spring stone yourself from a local boulder.

» Tip:

The sandstones in particular, which are available in many color nuances, are ideal for a Mediterranean garden, especially as they can be optimally combined with terracotta pots.

You can set up a source stone either as a solitary stone (monolith) or as a stacked cascade (several source stones). Of course, you have to make the decision for the respective variant depending on how much space is available in the garden.

» Tip:

Solitaire stones can be larger, even if they decorate a front yard, because they have an effect on their own. On the other hand, with cascades you must ensure that thewatercourse (regardless of whether it is a spring basin or a waterfall) is clearly in the foreground and still forms a unit with its surroundings.

Step 2 - Select Location:

A source stone can find its place anywhere in the garden. Even rock gardens, walls, garden ponds and groups of trees can be optimally upgraded with a source stone. Especially since in the game with the sunlight it also provides completely new perspectives of the same. And of course a source stone can also find its place on a terrace or in a conservatory. So find the perfect spot for your sourcestone and mark it.

Step 3 - Drill a hole for the pump hose:

Source stones are usually offered in specialist shops with a corresponding drill hole for the pump hose. If not, you still have to drill the hole in the stone yourself with a special masonry drill or concrete block drill or a cordless hammer drill or have it done by a local stonemason. It is best to use a Makita rotary hammer for this, the market leader convinces with quality.

» Tip:

The size (diameter) of the borehole depends on the hose size of the pump used. However, the hole shouldn't leave too much play for the hose.

Step 4 - Water supply:

The heart of the source stone is its water cycle, which you can ensure with a water basin placed under it or in the immediate vicinity. With the help of a water pump, the water is constantly transported from the basin into the source stone and back again.

You have to make sure that you install the basin, the pump hose and the associated electrical installation as invisibly as possible. The best way to work with the pool is with a cover that you can later plant with greenery or cover with stones. To ensure this, it is best to dig a pit in which to place the basin. Then place a suitable cover or grid on the basin and place the source stone on top of it. It is then only important that you cover the grid nicely.
