To bring larger hedges back into shape, it is worth purchasing a hedge trimmer. Here we explain which models are available on the market.
Almost everyone has one in their garden, be it just as an alternative to a fence or as a garden room divider: the hedge. It is clear to everyone that this does not always stay in shape, which is why a shape cut or pruning of the hedge must take place regularly. With the right hedge trimmer, this actually quite tedious work can be made much easier. However, it is important that you make the right choice. You must always pay attention to the location and size of your hedge and the type of hedge (plant species).
What hedge trimmer models are there?
The specialist trade today offers you a wide variety of types of hedge trimmers, which are then also offered at very different prices depending on the selection, quality and performance. These include mechanical, electric, battery-powered or petrol-powered hedge trimmers.
Important:
When buying a hedge trimmer, you should of course also pay attention to the length of the cut. The rule here is that long cutting lengths are far more suitable for large hedge areas. With short cutting lengths, on the other hand, it is clearly easier to model individual hedges (e.g. a so-called topiary). If you are not sure which cutting length you need, then it is best to take a photo of your hedge with you and get advice from a specialist retailer.
We would now like to introduce you to the four hedge trimmer models and their advantages in more detail so that you know which hedge trimmer is best suited for your garden.
4 hedge trimmer models presented
1. Electric hedge trimmers:
The electric hedge trimmer (e.g. available here) has been sold by far the most frequently in recent years and is certainly also a recommendable purchase for most garden hedges. When buying, however, it is important to note whether you need the electric hedge trimmer for trimming shrubs or trees, although well-known branded devices for thick wood hedges are now on offer.
» Tip:
You should check cheap offers carefully for performance and quality, especially since they often show clear signs of wear after a short time.
2. Gas Hedge Trimmers:The advantage of a petrol hedge trimmer is clearly its flexibility in the garden, since you do not have to consider an associated cable. These models are particularly recommended for extensive gardens. Another reason why professional gardening companies often use these models. Most of these hedge trimmers are also available with a flexible long version, with which you can also work on high hedges from a standing position.
» Tip:
Great bargains can always be found on the internet. For example, the FuxTec petrol motor hedge trimmer is currently available for EUR 89.90 instead of EUR 199.
3. Cordless hedge trimmers:
Two types of batteries - mains batteries or lithium-ion batteries - are offered in specialist shops for this type of hedge trimmer today, with lithium-ion batteries definitely being the future.
Battery-powered hedge trimmers (e.g. available here) are also considered to be flexible in use and do not produce any tax. However, it is always advisable to buy a second battery so that you can also work on larger hedge areas in one go. You should also pay attention to a well-ground cutting knife, ideally even a diamond-ground special knife.
» Tip:
One advantage of the cordless hedge trimmers is their volume, as these models are among the absolute quiet cutters!
4. Mechanical hedge trimmers:The classic among the hedge trimmers is only rarely used by modern gardeners and is more and more often forgotten on the shelves. Especially since working with this hedge trimmer is quite tedious and cannot be done with the same level of precision on large areas.
If you still use mechanical hedge trimmers (available here), you should only use them for small hedge areas and for trimming hedge plants.
