If you have to buy a new snow shovel, you shouldn't just take the first one that comes along. Pay much more attention to our tips when buying.

In our latitudes, snowfall can be expected every year from late autumn. And it is precisely from this point in time that the garden owner needs a functioning snow shovel to free garden paths and driveways from the white splendor.

Buying a suitable snow shovel makes our difficult work a lot easier! One reason why we would like to introduce you to important features that you should definitely pay attention to when buying a snow shovel.

Buy a snow shovel - follow these buying tips

Tip 1 - Material selection:

First of all, the choice of material is certainly decisive, which today extends to plastic, aluminium, other metals and wood as well as various material combinations. The numerous plastic snow shovels are among the absolute lightweights. They are therefore ideal for older people and also for women to use.

So-called cheap plastic models should always be checked for stability before you buy them, so that they don't break too quickly in wet, heavy snow. Because a double purchase would quickly destroy the low price.

Furthermore, aluminum snow shovels are now just as robust as metal and wooden versions. In terms of care, however, it is far easier to handle and can be classified as extremely hard-wearing compared to road s alt. Only small stray pebbles can give aluminum shovels a hard time because they often scratch the surfaces badly.

Tip 2 - Shovel Width:

The most common shovel widths are between 40 and 60 centimetres. However, you should always adapt these to the local conditions, e.g. the width of the sidewalks in the garden or on the sidewalks in front of the house. Within these latitudes, the snow shovels are also relatively easy to maneuver, even when you load them with heavy snow.

You should also pay attention to a slightly raised side guide with the shovel so that the snowdoes not slip off the shovel when pushed.

Tip 3 - Grip selection:

In addition to straight-handled snow shovels, models with ergonomic handles are also available today. So-called Y-handles and D-handles make handling a snow shovel even easier. Especially when snow is not only shoved loosely to the side, but also has to be piled up due to lack of space.

In the meantime, snow shovels with easily exchangeable handles or handles are increasingly being offered in specialist shops. Depending on the weather, you can easily swap out the grips throughout the winter season.

Tip 4 - slide rails and rubber lip:

When you buy a snow shovel, you should also take a look at the associated slide rails, which support the clearing process. Because the slide rails should work on tarred surfaces as well as on a layer of ice and/or snow.

On top of that, many snow shovels are fitted with a rubber lip at the end of the shovel to further protect the base material. This rubber lip should then also be made of high-quality plastic in order to be able to withstand the winter weather conditions (strong temperature fluctuations) and contact with road s alt and not to become porous right away.

Tip 5 - buy a snow witch instead of a snow shovel:

If you own a large plot of land or live in southern Germany or in the Ore Mountains, a snow witch is probably more suitable than a normal snow shovel. The specialist understands this to mean an extremely spacious snow shovel or snow pan, which is equipped with a complete roll bar on the rear side for reasons of stability. With such a snow witch, large masses of snow in particular can be pushed aside very quickly.
