The houseplant Zamioculcas is one of the most popular houseplants. It is easy to care for, undemanding and does not immediately take offense at care mistakes. That is why it is so well suited for plant beginners. It is easy to understand that one does not like to have only one specimen of such a plant. Then here's the good news: The Zamioculas are very easy to propagate. You even have three different options for this. The only catch is that you sometimes need a little patience.
Propagating Zamioculcas - 3 ways presented
Propagation by root division
Propagation by root division is a good idea if your Zamioculcas has grown a lot and needs to be repotted anyway. The procedure is very simple:
Remove the plant from the pot with a controlled pulling motion and divide the rootstock with a knife. The knife should be sharp and sanitized to allow for a clean cut and prevent entry of pathogens.
Place the two part plants with potting soil in new containers. Since half the rootstock takes up much less space, you can also use the flower pot you have been using for a Zamioculcas. Finally, water the two plants moderately.
Propagation by cuttings
Propagation by cuttings is more tedious than propagation by root division. In return, you have the additional pleasure of watching the growth of the new plant live right from the start. First, cut off a leaf from the plant.
The leaf of the Zamioculcas has the appearance of a shoot from which small leaves, the so-called pinnate leaves, grow. Place the leaf in a glass of water and bring it to a place that is not too bright. The windowsill on the north or east side of the house is a good location.
You will need to change the water regularly over the next few months. Eventually you will notice a thick knot at the bottom of the leaf with fine roots growing out of it. Is the root system beautiful?branched and bushy, you can plant the cutting.
Propagation by leaves
When propagating using leaflets, first detach one of these leaves from the plant. Then cut off a narrow strip in the lower area with a sharp, disinfected knife. Place the leaf, cut side down, in a seed tray or small flower pot. You can use ordinary potting soil as a substrate.
As with propagation from cuttings, propagation from leaves requires a few months of patience. Keep the leaflet moist regularly, even if nothing seems to be happening. After a few months you will find that your effort has been rewarded: root formation has started and your new Zamioculcas will start to grow.
