The magnificent rhododendron is a welcome shrub in many gardens which, in the right conditions, can almost grow into a tree. It sometimes happens in winter: The rhododendron rolls up its leaves.
Rhododendron runs on the back burner
This is completely normal though. The rhododendron is evergreen, which means that it also carries out photosynthesis in winter and thus water evaporates. If the leaves curl up, then the rhododendron runs on the back burner. That means it reduces photosynthesis and saves water.
Water when it's frost-free
It even prevents frost drying out. If the leaves are in this condition for a long time, countermeasures should be taken. On the one hand, you should make sure you have enough water in the winter months, whenever there is no frost.
Straw mats or anti-freeze
Secondly, you can also protect the rhododendron by not exposing it directly to wind and sun. Straw mats or frost protection fleece are two essential helpers. Plants that are in pots and cannot be placed indoors in warmer places should also receive this protection.
