With the ring daisy Bertram and its cultivation and care, we would like to introduce you to a plant that is both a flower and a medicinal herb.
The ring daisy from the mountains of North Africa - often referred to as Morocco chamomile - also thrives well in our latitudes. Which is why the upholstery perennial that blooms from May to July, sometimes even until the beginning of September, is increasingly being offered in specialist garden shops.
Growing ring basket Bertram
The perennial ring daisy, known in professional circles as bertram, should always be planted in a sunny, extremely dry location, but never in loamy soil. Ideally, you should also choose a location with a slight slope so that no waterlogging can form around the plant. If such a location does not exist in your garden, then you must make even and therefore moist soil areas more permeable. Simply add a bit of limestone gravel to the soil.
Ring baskets are also ideal for planting in pots and window boxes. Then you should only water the ring basket minimally every 1 to 2 weeks. The ring basket (about 10 to 15 centimeters high) is also very suitable for planting in rock gardens and for planting on walls.
As soon as the white-flowered ring daisy has settled into its new location, it usually multiplies by itself in the second year.
Care tips for the Bertram ring basket
The ring daisy, which looks very similar to daisies or marguerites, is one of the absolutely easy-care cushion perennials. The still closed calyx is interesting to look at from spring onwards, especially since the underside of the petals with their dark pink-red color forms a great contrast to the white border.
By the way: the calyxes close permanently in the evening and when it rains, which in turn is a great natural spectacle!
» Fertilize:
In spring and autumn you can provide the ring basket with a little complete fertilizer if necessary, but this is usually hardly necessary.
» Winter Protection/Heavy Rain Protection:
In the winter months when the ring basket is slowloses all of its green, you should cover it with fir twigs for the first two years of planting in order to protect it from severe frost. In this way, it will quickly sprout again with fresh green in early spring.
During long periods of rain, you should always cover the ring basket with garden fleece if there is any waterlogging.
» pruning:
After the ring dab has spread in all directions like a ground cover, you can cut it back from time to time. But then only after the flowering phase if possible.
» Pest infestation:
Ring baskets are only very rarely attacked by insects or fungal diseases. Usually only when the climate is extremely humid. In such exceptional cases, you must unfortunately treat it immediately with an appropriate fungicide or insecticide. In some cases, the use of biological defense also helps with the early detection of pests.
