Repotting plants needs to be learned, but can be made easier with a few tips. Especially in autumn you should give some plants new soil or a larger pot.
- Before you start, be sure that the plant needs to be repotted or you will probably only damage it.
- The pot should be slightly larger and should already be filled with a layer of drainage so that about a tenth of the pot is covered.
- Then you carefully and slowly push the actual plant out of its previous pot. Hitting the ground with the palm of your hand can help to loosen it.
- The roots should then be freed from the soil and dead roots can generally be removed.
- Then place the root ball in the middle of the new pot and fill with soil. However, the roots must have enough space on all sides, including downwards.
- The edges of the pot can then be filled with soil and then lightly press down.
- The plant then returns to its old location and has to be watered. This allows the soil to lie between the roots so that there are no cavities.
- The plant should be fertilized again about four weeks after repotting. The commercially available potting soil already contains fertilizer that is sufficient for the first few weeks.
