Storing seeds - How to do it right

If seed does not sprout, it is usually due to incorrect storage. We are therefore explaining to you how this should look best.

The ability of seeds to germinate depends primarily on their freshness. So it can be said unequivocally that seed that is as fresh as possible has far more germination capacity than old, seasoned seed. Fresh seeds guarantee up to 90 percent germination. This ability decreases significantly with each year of storage, so that after about 2 years of storage there is usually only about 30 percent germination.

In order to maintain germination, you must store the seed properly. This is the only way you can enjoy a rich harvest and flowers. We will now explain how this storage should look like.

Storage of seeds

Seeds should always be stored dry (maximum 25 percent humidity) and cool. The best place for this is therefore the basement. Furthermore, you should not expose the seed to direct light. Accordingly, it is best to store the seeds in opaque containers. You should not exceed a maximum storage time of three years. Otherwise you can discard the seed.

Hint:

Store the seeds in special germ protection containers, this ensures that hardly any diseases (e.g. fungal infestation) settle in the seeds.

Testing seed germination

If you are not sure how old the seed is or you have the feeling that you have stored it incorrectly, then you should not simply sow the seed, but do a germination test beforehand. This way you can see whether the seeds are still viable or whether you can dispose of them.

➤ How to do it:

Scatter some seeds on damp kitchen paper. Count the seeds as much as possible. Then place the damp kitchen paper on a plate, cover with a bag (use a transparent bag for light germs, a dark bag for dark germs) and wait for the regular germination time. Of course, the moisture in the kitchen paper must be retained during the germination period, which is why you have to spray it with water from time to time.

After the germination period is complete, you can complete the bagRemove and check the germination of the existing seeds. If the germination rate is good (at least 60 percent), then you can sow the seeds in the appropriate number. If it goes bad, discard the seed.
