The horseradish tree is an easy-to-grow plant with fruits that are considered a superfood. In addition, it is also very easy to propagate. Give it a try.
Horseradish trees are attractive ornamental plants. Since they have to be cultivated in tubs in our latitudes, Moringa trees are an ornament on balconies and terraces. If you wish, you can harvest the aromatic leaves and use them to give dishes a hearty taste.
There are many possible uses and a horseradish tree is always a gift that you can use to make other hobby gardeners happy. So why not think about propagating the miracle trees? If you follow the tips and advice below, you will easily be able to grow young plants and inspire enthusiasm in yourself and others.
There are two ways to propagate the Moringa tree:
- Seeds
- Cuttings
Propagating horseradish tree via cuttings
Anyone who already owns a strong Moringa plant will easily be able to multiply it by cuttings. Since the horseradish tree tolerates pruning very well, the annual pruning in early spring does not necessarily have to be used to cut cuttings. The best time to get cuttings is from June to August.
» Tip: Cuttings that are cut close to the stem root faster.
The cuttings should be cut about 20 centimeters long. A separate culture vessel is chosen for each cutting. You can fill conventional potting soil in the plant pots. The cuttings are placed in the plant pots and placed in a warm and bright place. The planters can be placed in the blazing sun. Horseradish trees tolerate temperatures up to 45 degrees. However, there should not be too great temperature fluctuations at the location. You should also avoid drafts.
Now we have to be patient for a few weeks. As soon as new leaves form, successful cultivation can be assumed, because then roots are also formed.

Propagating horseradish tree by seeds
In addition to cuttings, the horseradish tree can also be propagated by seeds. You can either get them from an existing plant or you can buy them if you don't have your own Moriga tree. It is important that you water the seeds for a day or two before sowing.
Each seed gets its own planter. You can use smaller clay pots or yoghurt pots for this. The plant pots are filled with potting soil. The substrate is slightly moistened. The seeds, which have swollen as a result of the watering, are now placed on the substrate and pressed about one centimeter deep into the earth. The plant pots now need a warm place to stand. Full sun is optimal. In any case, the cultivation should take place at room temperature. Avoid cold and draughts.
After about two weeks the first seeds will start to sprout. If other leaves have developed in addition to the cotyledons, the young plants are transplanted into a larger planter.
Growing Method | What needs to be considered? |
---|---|
Cuttings | • Cuttings are preferably cut in early summer • Each cutting gets a separate planter. • Cuttings must be kept warm and bright. |
Seeds | • Not every seed of the horseradish tree is capable of germinating. • Fresh seeds germinate best. • The seeds should be kept evenly warm. • The plant pots are regular to water. |
What should be considered when caring for young plants?
Once the seedlings have developed sufficiently, they are transferred to a larger flower pot. This should have a diameter of about 20 centimeters and also be about this height. Cactus soil is very suitable as a substrate for rearing. This is loose and sandy, which corresponds to the location requirements of the Moringa plant. Furthermore, the irrigation water can drain off well and does not accumulate in the planter. Even the larger planters are bright and warm.
» Light & Water
Depending on the season, the planters can also be placed on the balcony or terrace. The young plants spend the winter in a bright spot at room temperature. In order for the plantlets to continue to develop well, it is advisable for an additionalLight source in the form of plant spotlights, such as this one. Irrigation should also be carried out in winter. However, they should be watered sparingly to avoid waterlogging. The plant from the Himalayas cannot tolerate this, not even for a short time.
» pruning
If you have grown small trees about half a meter high, you can cut back the tips slightly so that the plant can branch out well. The horseradish tree grows very quickly and the side shoots should also be cut back when they are about eight inches long. You should repeat this pruning twice more for the young plants. You can then let the small tree grow and only intervene if long shoots form or you don't like the growth habit.
If the seeds don't germinate
In general, not every seed will germinate reliably. It can be assumed that out of ten plants, about seven to eight develop a seed. If the seeds are past their sell-by date, you will also have little luck getting young plants. Therefore, when buying, pay attention to the expiry date or use fresh seeds that you have obtained yourself or received from a friend or neighbor.
Constant temperatures above 20 degrees are important for reliable germination. The young trees also need sufficient light. Therefore, make do with an additional light source during the cold season.
