The coffee bush (Coffea arabica) or coffee plant is a popular houseplant that develops splendidly in the right location and with good care. From spring you can also place the plant in a sheltered place on the balcony or in the garden if the temperature is constantly above 10°C. The important thing is that you always follow the care instructions below. In addition, the right location is important so that the coffee plant always does well.
Coffee bushes prefer a bright location
The coffee plant likes a bright spot. However, young plants must be protected from too much sun. The blazing midday sun in particular can quickly burn the leaves of coffee bushes in a south-facing window. Plants usually tolerate the sun better outdoors.
An airy but not draughty location is also important. Normal room temperatures are favourable, although the temperature can easily drop in winter. Don't worry if the coffee plant sheds its leaves in the fall. This is normal. It will sprout again in spring.
How to properly care for coffee bushes
Coffee bushes need a lot of water
Water generously from spring through fall. Use soft, low-lime water at room temperature. The soil ball should always be slightly moist. The pot needs a drainage hole to prevent waterlogging.
In winter, the coffee bush takes a break. Then it is only poured from time to time so that the bale does not dry out completely. It is good if you ensure a higher level of humidity at any time of the year - spray the leaves daily with lime-free water, even in winter. When the leaves become too dry, the tips of the leaves turn dark. Also good for the moisture balance: Place the pot on pebbles in a water-filled saucer.
Regular application of fertilizer is important
From April to September, the coffee plant is happy about regular fertilizer application.A low-calcium liquid fertilizer is well suited, which you can administer once a week with the irrigation water. Freshly planted plants, for which you use nutrient-rich soil, do not need any additional fertilizer in the first few months.
Pruning the coffee bush
An occasional pruning keeps the plant in shape. The coffee plant is insensitive to pruning, you can trim it every now and then throughout the year. In young plants, pruning ensures a compact shape.
This is important for large coffee bushes
For large plants, use a soil mix containing clay, gravel or perlite. This gives the shrub a stable footing. Clay also stores moisture. If you choose a large enough pot, you won't have to repot the fast-growing shrub too often. However, replace the top layer of soil with fresh, nutrient-rich soil from time to time.
