He althy and, above all, well-groomed roses are among the most beautiful garden plants. To ensure that your roses in the garden grow he althily and also bloom beautifully, there are a few care rules that must be observed. Learn how to care for your roses here.
Caring for roses - 10 tips
- You should never plant roses too close together, otherwise pests or diseases can spread to the other plants. If leaves or buds are infected with powdery mildew, rose rust or black spot, you must pinch off the areas and dispose of them with household waste (see the article on rose diseases).
- Roses should be watered plentifully. 30 to 50 liters every three to four days is ideal in summer.
- You must remove wild shoots at the base. To do this, you may have to expose the root area.
- Pull weeds regularly as they can stunt the growth of the roses. You also have to loosen the soil from time to time.
- Rambler roses can also conquer whole trees. If you plan to do this, then you should not plant them too close to the tree. A distance of at least half a meter must be maintained here.
- Note the planting times for roses: Container roses can be planted at any time from March to October.
- You can propagate roses yourself with cuttings.
- So-called small shrub roses are ideal for small empty spaces in the bed. Make sure they get enough sun.
- Roses need to be trimmed - but do it right. Shrub roses are only thinned out, while bed roses are severely shortened.
- In order to get roses well over the winter, you should cover varieties that are particularly susceptible to cold with brushwood and pile up the soil.
