The coffee bush or coffee plant is undemanding and easy to care for. For optimal growth, however, it depends on the right location. Read how it looks here.
The coffee plant is an attractive plant that, depending on its size, thrives indoors or in the garden. The evergreen shrub grows to a height of one to two meters, outdoors it grows much taller under favorable conditions. There are plants that grow up to nine meters high. Unfortunately, Strauch does not supply its own coffee.
From the age of four to five years, however, it flowers regularly and bears fruit. The first green, then dark red berries are not suitable for drinking coffee, but can be used for propagation. In order for this to happen, however, you have to create optimal site conditions. Because only then can the plant develop magnificently.
Coffee bush as a houseplant
Light, airy and lots of space, these are the conditions for he althy growth. Place the plant in a bright window that you can shade during midday if necessary. Bright sun is not tolerated well, especially by young shrubs, the leaves burn easily.
An older coffee plant can get more sun, after it has acclimated to the location, midday sun is also okay. If you don't have space near a bright window, help with a plant lamp (such as this one here), then the coffee bush will also grow in a darker corner of the room. Drafts are also harmful, then the coffee plant throws off its leaves. Plenty of space is important because the shrub spreads very quickly.
Outdoor Coffee Bush
When temperatures are stable in late spring, the coffee plant can move to the balcony, terrace or garden. It does better in the sun outdoors, but slowly acclimate it to the new location. Be careful, when the temperatures drop in autumn, the shrub has to be brought back inside the house. A winter place with temperatures between 15 and 20°C is ideal.
You can move larger shrubs completely outdoors. Look for a location with wind protection and sun - but not directly in front of onesunlit house wall. The wall reflects the heat, and the shrub really needs a lot of space for its branches. You can prune the shrub to your heart's content to give it an even shape. He doesn't take offense at anything, but drives out again at the interfaces. This will give you a bushy and spherical shape.
In a nutshell: How to find the right location
- Indoors at a bright window with moderate sun exposure
- Pay attention to the large space requirement
- Moving to the balcony, terrace or garden in summer
- Sunny, sheltered places are preferred
- Entire outdoor planting for older shrubs
