When most of the native shrubs have withered in summer, the hibiscus in the garden with its lush pile closes the gap in bloom in July and August. The hibiscus can also be planted as a hedge, but it is important to remember that this is only nice and dense in summer and offers a corresponding privacy screen.
The location - sunny and sheltered
The garden hibiscus feels most comfortable in a sunny, sheltered spot. Here you should give the marshmallow enough space, as it spreads a lot and can reach a height of about 2 to 3 meters.
- The soil should be nutrient-rich
The hibiscus thrives particularly well in permeable, nutrient-rich soil. Therefore, when preparing for planting, the soil should be enriched with well-rotted compost. - Fertilize in spring
Fertilize the soil with an organic fertilizer every spring.

Once you have decided on a garden hibiscus, it is best to choose spring for planting. Because in the first year the hibiscus is still a little sensitive to frost. So it can grow well until winter.

How to plant your hibiscus in the bed
The exotic shrub is planted in the same way as the native shrubs. And this is how you plant the hibiscus in the garden:
❶ First, dig out the planting hole. This should be about 50 centimeters deep and wider than the root ball.
❷ Then loosen up the soil in the planting hole and mix it with some well-rotted compost.
❸ Water bare root plants in a bucket before planting. In this way you boost the water balance of the plant again.
❹ With container plants, only the soil ball is loosened. The plant in the pot has been sufficiently hydrated.
❺ Now you can insert the plant and cover the roots with the excavated soil. The plant is always well watered.
❻ Finally, you tread down the soil and water your garden hibiscus. To be on the safe side, place a watering rim around the plant.
For winter protection in the first few years, we recommend that you cover the soil around your plant well with mulch.
