They are relatively expensive in the supermarket or in the natural food store. You can shell out around 4 euros for 200 grams here. Far too much, it can also be cheaper! Namely with their own apples.

Here's a simple recipe to make apple chips yourself.

Apple chips recipe and tips for preparation

You don't need much to make apple chips at home. All you need is:

  • 1 to 2 kilograms of fresh apples (e.g. Elstar)
  • Fruit and vegetable slicer
  • Kitchen Knife
  • Parchment Paper
  • wooden spoon
  • possibly apple cutter (not absolutely necessary)

» Tip: Do not use fallen fruit for apple crisps. Because fallen fruit usually has bruises that reduce the quality of the chips and therefore first have to be cut out over a large area.

Now we can start!!!

Step 1: Preheat the oven

Before you pounce on the apples , preheat the oven to 70° for a fan oven.

Step 2: Wash apples

Take the apples and wash them thoroughly under water. Then remove the stem and any leaf residue.

Step 3: Remove core

Now you can remove the core of the apple. It's easy to do with an apple corer. If you don't have one handy, that's okay too. The cores fall out when you cut the apple slices.

» Tip: In my experience, two apples are enough for a tray. You don't have to cut more than that, otherwise the apples will brown unnecessarily.

Step 4: Cut thin slices

Now slice the apples. You can use a sharp kitchen knife or a fruit and vegetable slicer for this. This makes it much easier and faster.

» Tip: It is best to cut the apple slices as thinly as possible so that they become nice and crispy afterwards.

Step 5: Arrange the apple slices on the tray

The slices are now placed close together on the baking tray lined with baking paper. Feel free to use all the space, because the apples will shrink in the oven anyway.

Step 6: Put the tray in the oven

When the baking sheet is full, immediately place in the preheated oven to prevent the apple slices from browning. As a precaution, you can also brush the slices with lemon juice. However, this may change the taste of some apple varieties.

Step 7: Dry apples

Now the apples are dried at 70°C for about three hours. Leave the oven door open a little so that the moisture can escape and the chips get nice and crispy. If the door closes automatically, simply insert a wooden spoon between them.

Preparation in the dehydrator is somewhat more effective and uses less energy than in the oven.

The fructose caramelizes during drying, giving it the necessary bite. On the other hand, it can also quickly happen that the panes burn. So keep an eye on those delicious chips.

Step 8: Take the apple slices out of the oven

After about three hours, you can take the slices out of the oven. Do not be surprised, at the beginning these are still quite soft. They have a crispy bite when they have cooled down and "dried".

Step 9: Pack chips if necessary

If you don't want to eat your homemade apple chips right away, you should pack them airtight. If you leave them unwrapped for too long and get (atmospheric) moisture again, they will soften after a while. Tightly sealed plastic cans or small bags, which you can then seal airtight, are best suited for storage.
