In the lasagne method, flower bulbs are planted in different layers, so that little by little new flowers appear.

What is the lasagna method?
The lasagna method is a particularly clever way of planting flowers. Like a lasagne, they are placed on top of each other in different layers. Alternatively, this type of planting is also called layered or tiered planting.
It is divided into different-looking flowers, which stretch their heads out of the ground at different times. Flowers keep coming and the flower pot or flower bed is not empty when the first flowers have faded. Flowers should be selected that bloom best one after the other, so the bed is always bulging.
The flowers that bloom first are placed at the top. You start with early bloomers such as crocuses, snowdrops, tulips or daffodils and then use flower bulbs that bloom later. It is important to note the consecutive flowering times so that not all flowers bloom at the same time.
The flower bulbs are then arranged according to their size. The thicker bulbs go at the bottom, the smaller ones at the top. By taking advantage of the different levels, the splendor of the flowers is particularly dense in spring. If you plan well, you can fill your flower bed with impressive flowers from January to May.
By the way, the flower bulbs for the lasagne method are planted bySeptember to December, always before the first frost.
Pattern with the lasagna method
The patterns emerge almost automatically if you stick to using flowers that pok their heads out of the ground at different times. To do this, you should start with different early bloomers and then plant flowers that will impress with their colorful splendor at a later date. The following methods are highly recommended:
Method 1 (Beginner) | Method 2 (advanced) |
---|---|
Top: Crocus | Top: Daffodils |
Middle: Hyacinths | Middle 1: Hyacinths Middle 2: Squills |
Below: Tulips | Below: Grape hyacinths |
Hint: To get nice patterns, you should arrange the flowers in circles, triangles or rectangles. This is how the flowers form different patterns when they come out of the ground.
Planting flower bulbs in layers - Instructions

What you need for tiered planting
Material | Note |
---|---|
a flowerpot | It should be large and high enough for the flowers to be planted in layers. There should also be holes in the bottom to allow water to drain. Our recommendation: One Round pot with a diameter of at least 28 centimetres. But it can also be larger. |
Blähton | Clay balls that can be used for hydroponics. |
Potting Soil | It is best to use high-quality potting soil. |
Flower Bulbs | Your choice: See beginner and intermediate recipes above for inspiration. |

Lasagna Method - How it's done
- The pot is prepared with expanded clay. For this, the expanded clay is distributed in a layer approx. 2-5 cm thick at the bottom of the pot. The thickness of the layer depends on the size and height of the pot.
- Now follows a thin layer of earth.
- Then the first layer of flower bulbs goes into the pot. The thickest bulbs are planted first. If a pattern is desired, the flower bulbs should vary depending on the patternaligned.
- There is another layer of earth on top.
- Now the next flower bulbs follow. However, they should not be placed directly on the other bulbs, but slightly offset.
- This is followed by another layer of soil and again slightly offset flower bulbs.
- Give a layer of earth over it.
- Finally, the flower plugs with the names of the flowers are put into the pot and your flower bulb lasagne is ready.

Note: We did our example with a pot. Of course, the planting can also take place in the flower bed according to the same scheme. For this, all steps are carried out - as with the planting of the pot - with the only difference that a deep hole has to be dug.
