Laying a lawn edge - that sounds pretty easy at first, doesn't it? However, if you are not careful here, you can quickly make a few mistakes.
Edges (also called edging stones) can be used in a variety of ways in the garden. For example, to separate a bed from a green area. This makes it easier to mow the lawn because you can drive the lawn mower along the edge and also prevents the grass from growing into the beds.
Curbs can also form the end of a paved area. For example, they can also stabilize the outer stones of the terrace covering or border a garden path on the side. But they can also be used to secure an embankment or stabilize a gravel border around the house. Of course, you can also misuse curbs and use them to build a bench or as steps in the garden.
Tips for laying curbstones
➥ Tip 1 - choose the right strength:
You will find a large selection of edging stones in various sizes, materials and thicknesses in stores. The cheapest option is gray concrete. You can bring a little more pep into the garden with colored edging stones. For larger budgets and sophisticated garden design, you can also find edging stones made of natural stone, such as granite, limestone or sandstone, in specialist shops.
When choosing the material, you should decide according to your own taste. The only important thing is that when choosing the thickness, you always take into account the area in which the stones are to be laid and the loads they have to withstand there.

Laying is particularly easy if you decide on edging stones that you can push into one another. Each of these stones curves inwards on one side and outwards on the other.
➥ Tip 2 - Set curb stones in the ground:
It is advisable to always set the stones in the ground. With a height of 20 to 30 centimetres, that's not a problem. You can only prevent the green area from spreading under the stones by embedding it in the ground, for example. In addition, they getEdge stones also only have sufficient stability and do not tip over. So, set the curbs deep enough that only the top (which is shaped like a semicircle) sticks out at the top.

It is also important that you use a plumb line and spirit level when laying. This is the only way to ensure later that the stones are straight in the ground and also form a straight line.
Instructions for laying a lawn edge
Step 1:
In order to get a straight line, you first have to stretch a guide line nice and tight along the edge of the lawn. You may be able to use a garden path or a fence as a guide.
Step 2:
Now the spade is used. With this you now have to dig a trench the width of the curbs. The depth should be based on the height of the stones.
Step 3:
Now place the curb stones in this furrow. You don't have to fix them with concrete. They sit so deep in the ground that slipping is almost impossible. You can then tap them down lightly with a rubber mallet so that they are all the same height. You should perhaps concrete the curbs in concrete only in extremely stressed areas of the property.
Step 4:
You can at least partially fill the excavated earth back into the trench. To prevent it from sinking later, you should then muddy the soil with enough water. Then top up with more soil if necessary.
