Terraces are often exposed to the elements without protection. The most important thing here is proper cleaning and care.

Wood is particularly vulnerable and needs appropriate care so that the terrace still looks attractive years later. UV radiation, for example, makes the wood brittle and bleaches it. Moisture, on the other hand, penetrates the fibers and causes them to swell. Therefore, when deciding on a wooden terrace, you must be aware that it also requires a certain amount of maintenance.

Cleaning the wooden terrace properly

Before you can start with the actual care measures, you must of course first remove dirt from the wood. It is important to note that cleaning agents that contain acid must never be used to clean the floorboards, as these would attack the wood. A simple soapy solution is sufficient. Simply brush the terrace with a brush and the lye and it will be thoroughly clean. You can also clean the terrace with a high-pressure cleaner. Just don't set it too high.

You can also find special cleaning agents for certain types of wood in stores. However, it is then very important that the wood is allowed to dry completely for a few days before you start using the care products. When cleaning the terrace, always choose a good weather phase that lasts for several days and when there is no rain in sight.

Proper maintenance of wooden decking

Wood fades over time, so sooner or later it will turn gray. If you like this appearance, you can do without complex care procedures. However, always bear in mind that the care not only preserves the natural tone of the wood, but also protects it from mould, insect infestation and rot. In addition, good care extends the life of the wood. So always note the following when maintaining:

» choose tropical wood for laying:

If you want to keep the maintenance effort as low as possible, then you decideimmediately when laying the decking for tropical wood. These are much harder and more resilient. It is also sufficient if you occasionally apply an oil to the decking. A special glaze is not necessary in this case.

» Treat terrace with oil after laying:

Immediately after laying a wooden terrace, it is advisable to start with the care of the floorboards. To protect the wood from weathering and graying from the start, it is best to treat it with a special decking oil (e.g. available here). This also preserves the natural color tone and protects against UV radiation and moisture.

This oil is not only available in its natural form, but also in many different shades. You just need to apply it evenly with a wide brush or a puff. Important: The oil may only be applied to completely dry wood. After two days you can enter the terrace again.

» Clean terrace once a year:

In addition to this initial care, it is advisable to give the wooden floorboards a thorough care once a year. After you have cleaned the terrace and the wood has dried completely, you can treat it again with the special care oil. The best time for this procedure is in spring, after you have removed the dirt from the winter period.

If the wood is already grey, you can use a special care product, also known as a degreyer (e.g. available here). Also apply the degreyer to the cleaned, dry wood with a brush and rinse off with water later. You will be able to see the effect after just a few minutes.
