Bark mulch can be used in a variety of ways in the garden. We've got some examples and we'll tell you how to deploy it properly.
Bark mulch is made from crushed tree bark. And this offers a lot of advantages. As soon as you have spread the bark mulch in the flower bed as the top layer of soil, it also regulates its soil temperature. In summer, the bark mulch in the underlying soil also keeps the soil moisture far better, even when it is very hot. And the mulch also does a lot in winter, because then it protects the soil from drying out and frost. At the same time, bark mulch minimizes the growth of weeds, which in turn makes work significantly easier. Furthermore, it has been proven that microorganisms like to settle in bark mulch. This has the advantage of improving the soil structure and increasing soil fertility. So, in summary, bark mulch offers these benefits:
- Weed growth is minimized,
- Soil quality is improved,
- Soil moisture lasts longer,
- Floor protection through temperature regulation,
- Tidy Bed View/Garden Design Opportunities
How to spread bark mulch correctly
First of all: no matter where you spread the bark mulch or how you use the mulch: before spreading, you should always clear all beds and paths of weeds.
Apply bark mulch in flower beds or under shrubs/hedges/trees:
In principle, you should not apply the bark mulch in flower beds and under shrubs, hedges or trees higher than a layer of 5 centimeters. By using a rake or a small hand rake, you can easily distribute the mulch.
Important:
Applying bark mulch is less suitable if you have planted your garden beds with ground cover and if you are dealing with bed plants that have a particularly high lime requirement.
It is also important that you fertilize under the bark mulch from time to time. This often removes valuable nitrogen from the soil. It is therefore best to soak the soil before applying the bark mulchSupply Nitrogen Fertilizer.
Creating a garden path from bark mulch:
It is different if you want to create a particularly soft, natural-looking garden path with the bark mulch. Then you need to apply a layer of at least 10 centimeters. In addition, you should also lay out garden fleece on the garden path in advance.
