Getting camellias well through the winter isn't rocket science. Nevertheless, there are a few important points to keep in mind so that they survive the cold season well.

In general, camellias can tolerate low temperatures well. As an evergreen balcony plant, they even need low temperatures so that the flower buds can open in spring.
Suitable places for wintering
» Overwintering in greenhouse:
After fall, camellias need around 8 weeks of dormancy to prepare for overwintering. For this it is important that you put the plants in a cold and bright place. Frost-free greenhouses are best. The winter storage should have a constant temperature between 0 and 10 degrees. The humidity should also be at a constant 60 percent.
» Overwintering in the basement:
If you prefer to overwinter your camellias in the basement, always make sure that the temperature does not rise above 15 degrees Celsius. High humidity is also important. Therefore, spray the plants in the basement regularly with lime-free water. An ultrasonic humidifier is also helpful. If the humidity drops below 60 percent for a long time, the plants may shed their flower buds. This is a well-known reaction of camellia to warm temperatures.
» Overwintering in the apartment:
Anyone who has not found a suitable winter storage place can leave their camellias outside as long as possible. However, the temperature must not fall below 5 degrees Celsius. Then bring the plants into the house for as short a time as possible and expose them again after the end of the frost period.
Preparations for returning from winter camp
During the months of January and February, the camellia is usually in hibernation. Afterwards, night temperatures of 6 to 12 degrees Celsius are sufficient for the plants. However, they need a lot of light. A greenhouse is therefore ideal for growing camellias in anticipation of the upcomingto prepare for flowering. They can remain here until they are released.
The camellias that have been wintered in the basement, on the other hand, can only slowly get used to higher temperatures. It is helpful if you water the plants more, but without causing waterlogging.
Wintering of outdoor camellias

There are no hardy camellias. However, temperate climate zones can also be found in our latitudes. Camellias can also spend the winter outdoors, especially in the Rhine Graben, in the coastal region or on the Lower Rhine. Even in sheltered gardens, these plants survive the cold season. However, you need a few precautions:
» Cold Protection:
There must be adequate protection from the winter sun, otherwise the plants will dry out. You can shade them with fleece, for example. You can also protect your outdoor camellias from the winter cold with fir branches, reed mats, a thick layer of mulch or other materials.
» Windbreak:
Furthermore, there must be permanent wind protection, represented by hedges and fences, for example.
» casting:
On frost-free days, the plants should be watered a little to prevent them from drying out.
