Articulated arm awnings offer good protection from the sun on the balcony. But how do you properly install such an awning?
An awning is the perfect sun protection for the balcony. It also forms a perfect privacy screen, for example if you want to block out views from the apartments above. You will find various awnings in this regard in specialist shops, but the articulated arm awning is always best suited for the balcony. Of course, a so-called clamp awning would also be conceivable as an alternative, for the installation of which you do not have to drill into the facade, but an articulated arm awning is always recommended.
Important: If you are renting a property, you must obtain permission from your landlord prior to installation.
Instructions for installing an articulated arm awning on the balcony
» Step 1: Preparations before assembly
An awning can weigh up to 80 kilograms, which is why you need a helper for assembly in addition to stable anchoring.
If you have outdoor lighting on the balcony, you must also check the routing of the power line so that you do not damage it during installation. However, to be on the safe side, you should turn off the power completely before drilling.
» Step 2: Determine the height for installation
Since an awning should never be attached directly to the facade, it is always supplied with mounting plates. So you must first determine the ideal height for attaching the brackets. Be sure to use a spirit level to ensure these are on a horizontal line.
» Step 3: Mark & drill holes
Once you have determined the correct height, you must mark the drilling points through the mounting plates on the house wall with a pen. Then drill the holes with the drill. It is always advisable to have a complete drill set at home.
» Step 4: Screw the mounting plates to the facade
After drilling, you should inject grout into the holes before inserting the anchors as this will provide more grip. Threaded rods, which are often already included in the scope of delivery, are usually used as a holderare included. Once the mortar is completely set, you can screw the mounting plates to the facade.
Tip: If the wall of the house is not completely level, washers can compensate for this, because the depth of the mounting plates must be exactly the same.
» Step 5: Screw the awning to the mounting plates
Now you and your helper must insert the awning into the brackets of the mounting plates. If it sits correctly, then fix it with screws and nuts.
» Step 6: Set the angle of inclination of the awning
After you have firmly screwed the awning to all brackets, you can still adjust the angle of inclination of the awning. However, this must then be done equally on both arms.
