To ensure that tools in the garden can be used for a long time, you should store your garden tools in such a way that they are protected from the wind and weather.
Your own garden is a place to relax and recharge your batteries. In order for this to really succeed, however, the garden needs regular care. Gardening itself also contributes to the physical wellbeing of the gardener. With the right garden equipment and tools, the work is much easier to do. But after the work is done, it is necessary to stow away this equipment again. After all, you can't stand outside in the open air in all weathers, that would destroy them. So the question is: where to put all those garden tools?
❶ Store indoors
Space in the house is usually very limited. Bulky objects in particular have difficulty finding a suitable place. Soiling is also a major problem. There are often bits of earth hanging from the garden tools. When carrying it in and out, this dirt can spread everywhere. However, those who always take things to the basement have to carry the heavy equipment over steps every time. Even those who limit their selection to the garden tools that are really necessary always have a lot to lug around. Your own house or basement is therefore only suitable for storing garden tools to a limited extent.
❷ The garage as a storage location
If the garage has direct access to the garden, it makes sense to store the necessary garden tools there. It is important that the storage location is dry so that the garden tools do not start to rust. Especially in winter, when most tools are not in use for a long time, this is an important aspect when choosing the right storage location. The garage also offers sufficient security - so nothing gets lost during the cold season. With the right tips, it's easy to turn the garage into a neat and organized storage space.
But not only the garden tools can be easily stored in the garage. In addition to car wax, car diagnostic equipment, compressed air impact wrenches, washer fluid and polish find their place. For screwdriver sets, hammers, pliers, etc., an empty tool case is the best place to store them. Small tools can be sorted clearly here.
❸ Store garden tools in the garden shed
A garden shed is usually a bit larger than just a tool shed. It is equipped with windows and can be used as storage and living space at the same time. In order to separate these two areas from each other, it makes sense to install an additional wall. In this way, the additionally created resting place in the garden house does not lose its flair. The less decorative devices are not in view. If you expand the small garden house with a covered terrace, you can enjoy the garden even more on beautiful summer evenings and organize a relaxed barbecue evening, for example. When building a garden house, it is important to comply with the building regulations of the respective federal state. It is not always possible to actually get a permit for a larger summerhouse.
❹ Store the tools in the tool shed
A tool shed is not that homey and doesn't necessarily invite you to make yourself comfortable. It only serves as storage space for garden tools and utensils. A tool shed can be set up in the middle of the garden - so it can be reached quickly and easily when gardening is due. Everything is therefore in the immediate vicinity. As a rule, tool sheds are not equipped with windows. This way potential burglars cannot see what is stored in the shed. This is particularly important if, for example, bicycles or valuable machines are housed in it. There is also space for a workbench in a tool shed. In this way, the living space is spared from the noise of manual work.
Tip: If you want to store valuable equipment or bicycles in the tool shed, you should secure it with a padlock or something similar.
❺ A garden cabinet for storage
A garden cupboard fulfills a similar function as the tool shed. All the utensils that are necessary in the garden find their place there. The garden cupboard is smaller than the tool shed and therefore cheaper. It also takes up a lot less space. The garden cupboard is a storage cupboard in which the rather small garden tools can be accommodated. Setup is also easier and faster. This creates a short-term storage space for spades, plant pots and the like. A place for the lawnmowerfinding it is a bit more difficult there. To ensure that the garden cabinet is stable, it makes sense to place it in front of a solid wall.
❻ storage space in the gazebo
A gazebo is not an enclosed area. It is a building that is open on one or more sides. Such shelters are very often used in agriculture to store machines, tools and supplies. But the gazebo can also often be found on private property or in allotment associations. When building a gazebo in an allotment garden, the regulations of the Federal Allotment Garden Act must be observed, in particular § 3.
In the garden, garden tools or garden furniture can be accommodated in a gazebo. So everything is in a protected place when it rains or in winter. However, equipment and furniture in a gazebo is not as well protected from the weather as it is in an enclosed shelter, garden shed, or tool shed.
What is the best place to store garden tools?
Which storage location is ultimately an option depends primarily on two factors:
- the function of the storage location
- and the available budget.
If the sole purpose of the tool shed is to ensure the safe storage of garden tools, a tool shed or garden cupboard will suffice. The garden cabinet is space-saving and cheaper. Larger equipment, such as the lawn mower, can also be stored in a tool shed.
If, on the other hand, you want to create additional living space in the garden, which offers protection from bad weather and can be a place to rest, you need a gazebo or a garden shed. The gazebo can serve as a storage room for agricultural use or be a cozy gazebo. To combine living space and storage location, a garden shed is more suitable. There, the storage room can be designed as an integrated tool shed, which is separated from the living room.
It doesn't matter which variant you prefer: Before the final decision is made on a specific repository, it must be clarified whether the desired design and size will also be approved by the authorities. Only when this uncertainty factor has been eliminated should the planning and implementation of the desired storage location begin.
