Gorgeous candles are beautiful plants, but they require a little care, especially at the beginning of autumn and winter. After all, these plants are not really hardy. The good news: Glorious candles can be overwintered relatively easily.
In this context, it is important not only to use a sufficiently large pot or tub, but also to decide on the right location. However, it is often forgotten that pruning is required to ensure that the magnificent candles can shine in full bloom again in the coming season. If you follow the tips below, you can look forward to beautiful splashes of color in your home garden the following year, between June and October.
Preparing for Hibernation
Many hobby and professional gardeners overwinter their magnificent candles outside and in this context opt for a particularly wind and weather-protected place.
By pruning correctly, you ensure that the plant can form more overwintering buds. It is important to note that the stems must be shortened to ten to twelve centimeters above the ground. In this way you ensure that the magnificent candles grow back even more extensively and sprout better in the coming season.
Optimal time for pruning
Although many gardeners still advocate pruning the magnificent candles before winter, i.e. in autumn, there is also another opinion that says this is the wrong time. The reason given here is that cutting back in autumn would give germs the perfect opportunity to spread in the magnificent candles. It is therefore advisable to cut back in the spring.

With a little more caution and the awareness to proceed carefully and without inflicting major wounds, pruning in the fall is usually possible without any problems.
