They may look pretty, but most of them aren't really lucky with their coconut palms. The problem: if care and location are not right, they quickly develop brown leaves.
Coconut palms are quite robust in themselves. But most people who bring the coconut palm or coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) into the house as a pot plant simply have no luck with it. Some complain about spider mites, others about the fact that the leaves of the palm tree are turning brown. Both phenomena that pretty much everyone will have observed on their coconut palm. However, the cause of both of these problems is easily explained.
Cause of the brown leaves
It can always happen that brown leaf tips form on the coconut palm, which slowly but surely spread over the entire frond. The reason for this is usually that the air is too dry. In addition, a purchased and driven coconut often does not continue to grow in the room because it is not bright, humid and warm enough for it.
If the air in the room is very dry, the leaves usually don't just turn brown. Spider mites often also spread on the palm, which is why it is advisable to check the coconut palm for pests from time to time. So coconut trees do need some maintenance.
You can do about it
» Tip 1 - Adjust temperature:
To prevent brown leaves on the coconut palm and enjoy beautiful growth, you need to ensure that the plant is in a nice, warm place all year round. Even in the cold season, the prevailing temperatures should not fall below 18 degrees for the benefit of the palm tree.
» Tip 2 - Increase humidity:
In addition, the humidity must be very high. Around 70 to 80 percent is required here. This means you need to spray the coconut tree daily to keep the leaf tips from turning brown.
» Tip 3 - water properly:
Water the plant liberally from May to September. However, you must not drown them, otherwise the leaves will also die off. Then reduce the watering again from October.
»Tip 4 - Fertilize the coconut palm:
Fertilize the coconut palms approximately every 14 days in spring and summer with a suitable liquid fertilizer (green plant fertilizer is best).
» Tip 5 - Repot the plant every 2 years:
It is also advisable to repot the plant every two years. Please note that half the nut must be sticking out of the ground so that the roots have enough space in the pot.
