The Kolkwitzia can also be easily planted by hobby gardeners without intensive prior knowledge. So you don't even need to have a green thumb for this.

The Kolkwitzia (Kolkwitzia amabilis), also known to many as the mother-of-pearl shrub, is a real feast for the eyes not only when it flowers in May and June, but also in autumn, when the otherwise lush green foliage turns deep red. The shrub also gives off an intoxicating scent that attracts butterflies, bees, and bumblebees. Since it is easy to care for and largely resistant to diseases and pests, even inexperienced hobby gardeners will enjoy this beautiful shrub for a long time.
How to plant the Kolkwitzia correctly
Kolkwitzias are usually available as container plants. To pull them out of the pot, you should hold the plant as far down as possible. Look closely at the plant and check for root damage. If necessary, remove any visibly diseased root strands. Then place the roots in water for at least half an hour and dig a planting hole in the meantime. This should have about twice the volume of the root ball. Then insert the root ball and pile up soil all around. Finally, cover the roots with the substrate and water the Kolkwitzia generously.

You can plant Kolkwitzias as a hedge or specimen plant
If you cultivate your Kolkwitzia as a solitary plant, you have to take into account the growth width that sets in with increasing age when planting. Like the height, it is around 350 centimetres. Hold appropriately on all sidesa distance of 175 centimeters from house walls, fences, garages or other plants.
If the Kolkwitze grow as a hedge, two plants per meter are sufficient. Be aware, however, that it will take a few years for a hedge to form, as Kolkwitzias initially grow slender in height before beginning to expand in width.
When is the best time to plant Kolkwitzia?
Ideally, plant your Kolkwitzias in spring. The plants then have enough time to form a sufficient root system before winter. With a bit of luck, you will even experience the first blossoms in the year of planting, which can then be expected in May to June.
Find the right location for the Kolkwitzie
Kolkwitzias are capable of surviving from shady to full sun. In permanent shade, however, you shouldn't expect a large display of flowers. If the beautiful flowers are an important decision criterion for Kolkwitzias for you, only choose sunny to partially shaded locations. You don't have to be afraid of frost damage with Kolkwitzia, regardless of the location. The subshrubs are very hardy outdoors.
What are the demands of the Kalkwitzie on the soil?
The Kolkwitzie is one of the frugal plants that can get along with almost all types of soil. Improvements are only appropriate for pure sandy soils or clay soils. Enrichment with organic material such as mature compost or with ordinary garden soil is sufficient here.
