Multiply almond trees: It works with these simple methods

If you like growing plants yourself and are patient, you can easily propagate almond trees. There are several ways to do this.

Anyone who loves almond trees can multiply them in many different ways. For example, you can germinate an almond kernel or cut and root cuttings. If you have fun growing and propagating plants yourself and also have patience, you can achieve good results. Note, however, that the resulting young plants are often not hardy, even if you use seeds or cuttings from frost-resistant varieties. Almond trees propagated by hand are well suited as attractive container plants.

How to propagate almond trees

» Option 1 - propagate almond trees with cuttings:

Propagating almond trees from cuttings is considered difficult. But it's definitely worth a try. Proceed as follows:

❶ First of all, you need to take cuttings from semi-lignified shoots. Then coat the interface with a rooting agent (available here). This is a solution containing synthetic plant hormones that promote root formation.

❷ Now place the cuttings in potting soil and keep the substrate slightly moist all the time.

❸ Roots should have formed after a few weeks. Then you can transplant the young plants.

» Option 2 - pull almond trees from a core:

For this method you need almonds with their shells, a jigsaw or wooden file, potting soil and containers. Then do the following:

❶ Open the hard shell a little with a wood file or fretsaw to allow water to penetrate to the kernel, because unopened kernels take several months to germinate.

❷ Now place the sawn almonds about 1 to 1.5 centimeters deep in pots with special potting soil. The potting soil is low in nutrients and permeable to air. These are ideal conditions for germination.

❸ Always keep the soil slightly moist and place the pots in a bright spot. A room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius is ideal. The germination process now takes severalweeks.

❹ Once small plants have formed, you must place the young shoots individually in pots. The soil may contain compost, as it serves as a long-term fertilizer. Only select plants that look vigorous, strong and he althy.

How to properly care for the new plants

Do not put the young plants outside immediately! You have to gradually get the plants used to it. Above all, avoid extreme temperature fluctuations. Most varieties tolerate frost, but not a sudden change from warm to cold.

As a fertiliser, some compost is perfectly sufficient, since over-fertilized plants are more susceptible to disease. It is important that you put the plants you have grown in the tub in a very cool, bright place in winter.

If you have gotten your new almond tree through the first two years, you can place it in the garden, because only then will it be strong enough for outdoor life.
