Flower bulbs must be planted in autumn and should never be stored on top of each other. These and more tips are available in our little guide.
Autumn is the time to plant bulbs, so in spring you'll be greeted by tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses. Spring bloomers are a must in any garden and are particularly good for planting in borders or to mark paths.
Plant in autumn
Flower bulbs are planted in the ground in autumn, this can be as late as December. However, it shouldn't be too late either, because the onions should form the first shoots before the frost. These are not yet sticking out of the onion, but they are about to.
What is the planting depth for flower bulbs?
As a rule of thumb: make the planting hole about twice as deep as the flower bulbs are thick. Make sure the soil is nice and loose. If not, just loosen up the heavy soil with some sand.
Very important: The tip of the flower bulb must point upwards!
Tip: Plant bulbs in odd-numbered groups
You can plant the bulbs individually, but also in groups, which of course looks particularly beautiful during the flowering period. It looks particularly natural and beautiful when the flower bulbs are planted in uneven groups. For example in groups of 3 or 5. Please refer to the packaging for the correct planting distance.
Pruning off flowering plants in spring
After flowering in spring, cut off the faded plants just above the ground and leave them there for a few more weeks. This allows the onions to gather strength and absorb more nutrients from the soil. Leaves and stems are only removed when they have withered.
Dispose of Moldy Onions
The onions will come out after about four weeks. Here you can check whether the onions are still okay. Please dispose of broken, dried out or moldy onions (not in the compost!).
Store flower bulbs in a cool and airy place
The other onions are then stored in a cool and airy place until autumn, ideally on a spread out newspaper on thefloor or on the shelf. Never stack the onions on top of each other in a box - this promotes mold growth. Bulbs that are already infected can also infect others. If you pay attention to this, you will be able to enjoy your heralds of spring again next spring.
