Propagating peonies from seed is not for the impatient gardener. If you still want to try it, we have instructions for you.
Certainly it is not particularly difficult to grow peonies from seeds and thus to propagate them. However, it is only a worthwhile affair for patient hobby gardeners who want to raise their plants in peace and with a lot of love and watch them thrive. The propagation variant is therefore absolutely not for gardeners who want to see success quickly, because it can take quite a while before the first flowers can be seen. When is the best time for propagation?
The period from September to October is best for propagating peonies. To do this, you must either take seeds from your own plant at the beginning of autumn or buy seeds in stores.
How to propagate peonies by seed:
1Plant the seeds in deep seed trays previously filled with nutrient-rich cactus soil. Then put the bowls in a partially shaded place. It is then important that you always keep the soil moist.
2In the spring, the first plant shoots can be seen. However, the seedlings remain underground. Now you need to add sandy substrate and some quartz to the soil.
3Since the plants have already developed a deep root system in the spring, you have to start repotting. It is best to use deep palm tubs for this. This gives your peonies plenty of room to develop.
4In summer you have to place the small plants in semi-shade. You must then fertilize by August at the latest and ensure that the soil is rich in nutrients. Now the growth of the seedlings stagnates until next spring.
5In autumn you can plant the peonies in their final location. Just like fully grown plants, they can then overwinter outside without any problems. Later, however, it is important that you support the peonies.
