When you hear the term "leafy pipit", you might think it is a species of bird. However, the meaning is completely different.
In order to explain the term arbor pipit, one needs to know what exactly an arbor is. An arbor is denoted by:- a shelter that has a roof but no walls
- garden tools can be stored in it
- it is no larger than 24 square meters
- every now and then a table or chairs can be set up in it
- but nobody is allowed to stay in it permanently
The legal situation in Germany is very precise here. The arbor may not have more than 24 square meters of floor space. This also includes a possible free seat. If someone stays in it permanently, it is referred to as living space and is therefore subject to further legal regulations.
In principle, the arbor can be a garden shed, a patio or a combination of both. You can often find them in a so-called allotment garden.
Tip: Don't confuse the arbor with a dacha. This is a weekend house with a garden.
How did the idea for the allotment garden come about?
It is not clearly defined when the first allotment garden was created. However, at that time there were many people who were looking for a small piece of nature away from the city center and built a garden there. Here they could grow vegetables, spend their free time and enjoy the peace.
Moritz Schreber coined the name "Schrebergarten". The university lecturer and doctor from Leipzig was revered by many allotment gardeners, which is why they also developed the term “allotment gardener” for themselves.
How did the "leafy pipit" come about?
In the course of the emergence of the allotment gardens, there were some people who considered themselves to be a better class within society because of their own home. Allotment gardeners who grew their own vegetables and also had the opportunity to find peace in their garden were therefore all the more ridiculed.
This is how the so-called "Laubenpieper" came about. This term is used solely to make fun of the people who own a gazebo. It is often well-off city dwellers who still use this term today to describe such thingsMocking people.
However, they often express a certain envy, since the allotment gardener creates a place in his own garden that is not only beautifully designed, but they also find a certain amount of peace and quiet and their own tasty vegetables can grow.
Advantages of a gazebo
While the term "leaven pipit" is actually meant to be derogatory, there are some advantages that an allotment gardener takes advantage of:
- He has very low investment costs for the property, which are recouped in a short time.
- He can grow vegetables in his allotment that are not contaminated with pesticides.
- In the past, the gazebo still offered farmers a certain yield in times of economic bottlenecks thanks to the vegetables they grew themselves.
