It's Teatime! - Finally it's time for ginger biscuits again. But why buy them separately when you can bake them yourself? This recipe shows you how.
"They're crazy, the Brits!" thinks Obelix when the belligerent islanders in the comic "Asterix and the Britons" take a break at 5 o'clock sharp to drink "hot water with a drop of milk". But this is really no joke. The tradition of afternoon teatime has survived to this day in Britain. In addition to tea and sandwiches, ginger biscuits are also part of a classic English tea time. However, since not only English people drink tea in the afternoon, but we also like to have a tea hour here in Germany, you can now buy ginger biscuits from us. You don't even have to buy the cookies. With just a few ingredients, you can also bake the right biscuits for a typical 5 o'clock tea yourself. So grab some fresh ginger from the garden and let's get started.
You will need this for a tray of ginger biscuits:
‣ 300 grams flour
‣ 1 packet baking powder
‣ 200 grams softened butter or margarine
‣ 150 grams brown sugar
‣ 1 tablespoon ground ginger or 1 piece of freshly grated ginger (about 2 centimeters)
To prepare the ginger biscuits:
- Put the softened butter/margarine in a bowl along with the ginger and sugar.
- Mix and add flour and baking powder.
- Knead everything into a firm, heavy dough. Best with your hands.
- Form the dough into walnut-sized balls, place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and flatten with a fork until the biscuits are about 1 centimeter thick.
- Bake the dough in a preheated oven at 180 degrees for about 12 minutes until the biscuits are golden brown.
- Let it cool down and put in a tight-fitting container.
